ALPINE — The California Highway Patrol is asking for the
public's help in finding a hit-and-run driver who struck and
killed a bicycle rider on Alpine Boulevard.
The victim, identified by the Medical Examiner’s office
as 30-year old construction worker Edward Costa, of Alpine, was
riding in the bike lane on eastbound Alpine Boulevard in front
of the Alpine Sheriff Station, when he was hit at approximately
4:50 p.m., be a vehicle also traveling eastbound, said
California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings.
According to witnesses and physical evidence, a vehicle
traveling at a high speed, described as small, white pick-up
truck, swerved into the bike lane on Alpine Boulevard, hit the
back of the bike, throwing the victim about 50 feet, Pennings
said.
The driver of the vehicle then sped away from the scene
leaving leaving the victim in the road. According to witnesses,
the driver then turned right onto South Grade Road.
Employees from Coldwell Banker were the first to reach
the victim, along with another driver who witnessed the
hit-and-run and called 911.
The victim was transported via air ambulance to Sharp
Memorial Hospital. At 11 p.m. Tuesday he was pronounced dead,
according to Medical Examiner investigators.
Pennings said the vehicle will have significant
right-side damage, including to the right headlights and
right-side mirror. It may have a white California license plate
with red lettering. Officers are working with clues left at the
scene to find the suspect's vehicle.
“What we're looking for is a headlight similar to this.
We have the headlight that we're piecing together as well as a
right mirror assembly, and we have numbers off them we'll be
able to run those through the computer and come up with a make
and model of the vehicle,” Pennings said.
Thanks to several security cameras in the area, the vehicle has
been identified as a White 2004-06 Ford F150 Pick Up.
Anyone with information about the collision or this
vehicle is asked to call the CHP at (619) 401-2000. To reach the
Costa family call Joe at (619) 609-9118.
Eddie, known as “The Big Kid” by his friends and
family, lived in Alpine with his wife, Kristine, and two young
sons, Austin, 10, and Carter 2. According to reports, he was
taking his new bicycle out for an evening ride when he was
struck and killed. He was not wearing a bike helmet at the time.
