50th anniversary open house
     ALPINE — As part of its 50th anniversary, Alpine Lutheran Church is holding an Open House on Saturday, Jan. 12, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the church, 2040 Tavern Road, across the street from Joan Mac Queen Middle School. The public is welcome to attend.

Urban survival workshop
     ALPINE — The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council is presenting “Ready or Not: An Urban Survival Workshop,” on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. in the Joan Mac Queen Middle School gymnasium, 2001 Tavern Road.
     Presenters Susan Conniry and Tom Beasley, authors of Ready or Not, will talk about how to survive during the first hours and days after a disaster. Topics covered include controlling panic, the importance of shelter, creating drinkable water, and alternative food sources. If you were shaken by last October’s wildfires and would like to be more prepared, this free training will prove a valuable tool for any emergency situation.

Youth theater production
     ALPINE — A group of local young actors will be performing the production “Boardinghouse Reach,” at the Alpine Woman’s Club on Jan. 25, 26 and 27.
     The production, sponsored by the Alpine Kiwanis Club and Christ Our Saviour Anglican Church will play on Friday and Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

East County Health Fair
     ALPINE — The Alpine Chamber of Commerce Health Care Committee, in partnership with the Grossmont Healthcare District, will host the Art of Living Healthy Expo on Jan. 26, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Alpine Elementary School at 1850 Alpine Blvd.
     An art contest with healthy living as the theme, a health fair for pets, a wide range of health care information from doctors who are specialists at regional hospitals, and numerous health care vendors also will be featured at the Expo.
     Information will be presented by doctors during separate panels about health issues for men and women. The specialists will answer questions from the audience. The panelists include medical directors at cancer centers, a cardiologist, a plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeons, an ophthalmologist, a neurologist and leading experts on sexually-related medical issues.
     A series of speakers also has been scheduled to talk about ways to prevent traumatic brain and spinal injuries, how to do the Heimlich maneuver, the best way to talk with health care providers, and sun protection for children, among other issues.

Sunrise Powerlink EIR hearings
     MTN. EMPIRE — Several hearings will be coming up in the near future to allow residents to get more information and ask questions of specialists for the SDG&E Sunrise Powerlink project, after the release of the Draft Environmental Impact Report on Jan. 3.
     Sunrise Powerlink EIR Workshops will be held locally at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., on Monday, Jan, 28 at 7 p.m., and two at Mountain Empire High School, 3305 Buckman Springs Road, Pine Valley, on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 3:30 and 7 p.m.
     An Administrative Law Judge Public Participation Hearing will be held at MEHS on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for residents to go on legal record with their comments.

Blood bank at Mountain Empire
     MTN. EMPIRE — The San Diego Blood Bank blood will accept blood donations at an open to the public blood drive hosted by Mountain Empire Jr. Sr. High School, 3305 Buckman Springs Rd., Pine Valley, Thursday, Jan. 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the gym.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation.

Alpine Aglow
     ALPINE — Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the Alpine Aglow meeting on Jan. 18. James Barkley from Marysville, Wash. will be the guest. He and his wife Kathy are the founders and directors of the Elijah Commission.
     Alpine Aglow, a non-denominational group of men and women of every age, meets the third Friday of every month at Bethel Christian Assembly, 1929 Arnold Way. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., meeting starts at 7 p.m.

Kiwanis youth Olympics
     ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will hold its annual Youth Olympics on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at Alpine Elementary School. The schedule for this event is: 8:30 a.m. — Registration, 9 a.m. — Opening ceremonies and competition begins, 10:30 a.m. — competition concludes, 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Magician performance, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — Medal Presentation, conclusion of games.
     There will be 12 events: Basketball Dribble, Basketball Free Throw, Long Jump, 20-Meter Races, 40-Meter Races, 60-Meter Races, Sit Ups, Rope Skipping, Pull/Chin Ups, Soccer Ball Dribble, Softball Throw, Bicycle Gymkhana.
     Competition will be by age group divisions: 4/5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12/13. Boys and Girls will compete separately. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each event, each division, boys and girls.
