Hollingsworth
announces fire relief legislation
State Senator
Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta) has recently announced the
introduction of disaster relief legislation to assist
homeowners, businesses, and local governments afflicted by the
wildfires that occurred in late 2007 in San Diego and Riverside
Counties, as well as in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino,
Santa Barbara, and Ventura Counties.
Hollingsworth authored the bill, SB 1064, after the
wildfires damaged or destroyed thousands of homes and countless
acres of property in Southern California and hit his Senate
district, which includes the fire-prone area of rural East
County, particularly hard.
Similar to previous disaster relief measures adopted by
the legislature, SB 1064 allows homeowners and businesses to
carry forward losses resulting from the disaster into future
taxable years, ensures that standard property tax deductions
continue for those displaced from their homes. It reimburses
local governments for reductions in property tax revenue
resulting from disaster-related decreases in values.
“Those affected by the fires, especially those who lost
their homes, deserve fair, compassionate tax treatment as they
work to rebuild their lives.” said Hollingsworth. “SB 1064 will
help get these individuals and other entities back on their
feet.”
Hollingsworth represents the 36th Senate District. The
district includes North and East San Diego County, and portions
of the City of San Diego.
