Alpine Aglow
ALPINE — Please mark your calendars and plan to attend
the Alpine Aglow meeting on Jan. 18. James Barkley from
Marysville, Wash. will be the guest. He and his wife Kathy
are the founders and directors of the Elijah Commission.
Alpine Aglow, a non-denominational group of men and
women of every age, meets the third Friday of every month at
Bethel Christian Assembly, 1929 Arnold Way. Doors open at
6:30 p.m., meeting starts at 7 p.m.

Kiwanis youth Olympics
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will hold its
annual Youth Olympics on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at Alpine
Elementary School. The schedule for this event is: 8:30 a.m.
— Registration, 9 a.m. — Opening ceremonies and competition
begins, 10:30 a.m. — competition concludes, 10:30 to 11 a.m.
— Magician performance, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — Medal
Presentation, conclusion of games.
There will be 12 events: Basketball Dribble, Basketball
Free Throw, Long Jump, 20-Meter Races, 40-Meter Races,
60-Meter Races, Sit Ups, Rope Skipping, Pull/Chin Ups,
Soccer Ball Dribble, Softball Throw, Bicycle Gymkhana.
Competition will be by age group divisions: 4/5/6, 7/8,
9/10, 11/12/13. Boys and Girls will compete separately.
Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for each
event, each division, boys and girls.
Free guitar lessons
ALPINE — Middle and High School students are invited
participate in free beginning guitar lessons beginning next
Wednesday, Jan. 23. Father Keith Acker will be teaching the
class from 3-3:45 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons at the Alpine
Community Center (1830 Alpine Blvd).
The instruction is for beginners. Students need to
bring their own guitar; electric and acoustic guitars can be
used for the class. Basic fingering and sight reading will
be taught. There are two other classes for teens that
already have learned the basics.
Fr. Keith has been teaching guitar for 20 years. And
you don’t have to pay for the class — it is the Free Teen
Guitar Class.
The New Beginner’s Class is limited to 10 students so
reservations are required. Sign-up for the classes can be

Historic buildings open house
ALPINE — The Alpine Town Hall will be open to the
public on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.
This is a great opportunity to go back in time and
learn more about Historic Alpine from several knowledgeable
docents. The Town Hall, owned and operated by the Alpine
Woman’s Club, was built in 1899 and is located at 2156
Alpine Blvd.
The historic buildings owned and operated by the Alpine
Historical Society will not be open this month. They are in
the process of doing some renovations. They hope to have
them open again in February.
Canyonfolk house concert
ALPINE — Local venue, Canyonfolk House Concert, will be
hosting a show on Saturday, Feb. 2 with musician John
Batdorf,
johnbatdorfmusic.com.
The doors open at 7 p.m. for the dinner/desert potluck
with coffee, tea, bottled water, and other beverages. It is
not mandatory to contribute but makes for a much tastier
buffet when others do. The show begins at 8 p.m. and the
seats are $15 suggested donation.

Alpine historical quarterly
meeting
ALPINE –The Alpine Historical Society will hold its
quarterly potluck luncheon meeting on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 1
p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd. Members,
their guests and others interested in the history of Alpine
are invited to attend.
Vonnie Sanchez, who arrived in Alpine at the age of
eleven months will be the featured speaker. Alpine’s
excellent climate attracted Vonnie’s parents to our town in
hopes of improving her father’s health. It worked—and Vonnie
has spent her entire life among Alpine’s rolling hills and
country roads. She has been an employee of The Alpine Sun
for fourteen years and is currently the Assistant Publisher.

Youth theater production
ALPINE — A group of local young actors will be
performing the production “Boardinghouse Reach,” at the
Alpine Woman’s Club on Jan. 25, 26 and 27.
The production, sponsored by the Alpine Kiwanis Club
and Christ Our Saviour Anglican Church will play on Friday
and Saturday beginning at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoon at
2 p.m.

East County Health Fair
ALPINE — The Alpine Chamber of Commerce Health Care
Committee, in partnership with the Grossmont Healthcare
District, will host the Art of Living Healthy Expo on Jan.
26, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Alpine Elementary School at
1850 Alpine Blvd.
An art contest with healthy living as the theme, a
health fair for pets, a wide range of health care
information from doctors who are specialists at regional
hospitals, and numerous health care vendors also will be
featured at the Expo.
Information will be presented by doctors during
separate panels about health issues for men and women. The
specialists will answer questions from the audience. The
panelists include medical directors at cancer centers, a
cardiologist, a plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeons, an
ophthalmologist, a neurologist and leading experts on
sexually-related medical issues.
A series of speakers also has been scheduled to talk
about ways to prevent traumatic brain and spinal injuries,
how to do the Heimlich maneuver, the best way to talk with
health care providers, and sun protection for children,
among other issues.
Potrero/Tecate fire victims
event
POTRERO — The Potrero/Tecate Kiwanis will host a fund
raising event to benefit total burned out victims in the
Potrero and Tecate area on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. at the Potrero County Park.
Live music will be performed by Men of Praise and a the
Gaskell Brothers will put on a performance.
Anyone who is willing to assist in making some
cornbread for the event please contacts Anita Meneses
322-6755. Local bakers are also invited to donate items for
the bake auction. Please bring baked goods and have your
name listed on them.
Sunrise Powerlink EIR hearings
MTN. EMPIRE — Several hearings will be coming up in the
near future to allow residents to get more information and
ask questions of specialists for the SDG&E Sunrise Powerlink
project, after the release of the Draft Environmental Impact
Report on Jan. 3.
Sunrise Powerlink EIR Workshops will be held locally at
the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd., on Monday,
Jan, 28 at 7 p.m., and two at Mountain Empire High School,
3305 Buckman Springs Road, Pine Valley, on Thursday, Jan. 31
at 3:30 and 7 p.m.
An Administrative Law Judge Public Participation
Hearing will be held at MEHS on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6:30
p.m. This will be an opportunity for residents to go on
legal record with their comments.

Kiwanis Club to honor local Law
Enforcement
ALPINE — On Feb. 9 at their Saturday Meeting The
Kiwanis Club of Alpine will honor local Law Enforcement, The
San Diego Sheriff’s Department, The California Highway
Patrol and The U.S. Border Patrol.
Each year the Kiwanis Club proclaims a Law Enforcement
Appreciation Day in which they recognize the above
Departments choice as Law Enforcement Deputy, Officer and
Agent of year. Also present will be Joel Anderson, 77th
District Assemblyman who will present each recipient a
Resolution from the State of California Legislature.
The Meeting which is held at the Alpine Elementary
School Auditorium will be open to all guests to honor our
