Local kids
compete at 31st annual
Kiwanis Youth Olympics
ALPINE — The 31st annual Kiwanis Youth Olympics was held at
Alpine Elementary School last Saturday, Jan. 19. Athletes began
arriving to register bright and early, and by 9:30 a.m.
approximately 100 children from all the Alpine schools and
beyond had donned their bib numbers and were out competing in
the 12 offered events.
As usual, the most popular two events were the softball
throw for distance and the 20-, 40- and 60-meter runs. Other
events included, Chin-ups, Sit-Ups, rope skipping, Long Jump,
Bicycle Gymkhana, Basketball free-throw, basketball dribble, and
soccer ball dribble.
Competition concluded at 10:30 a.m. when “The Amazing
Dana” took center stage and entertained children and parents
alike with his mind boggling magic and witty commentary. The
Kiwanis' cook shack provided barbecue burgers and hot dogs
throughout the afternoon.
At 11:30 a.m., Miss Alpine, Summer Babineau and Miss
Teen Alpine, Carly Albrecht helped award all the deserving
Olympians with gold, silver and bronze medals for their
performances. Nearly 300 medals were awarded before the
afternoon came to a close.
With all the competing sporting events going on in the
area, as well as it being a three-day weekend, The Kiwanis Club
was very pleased with the turn out and hopes next year’s 32nd
annual Youth Olympics will draw even more participants.
