Alpine’s Hunter withdraws from presidential race
Local Alpine
congressman Duncan Hunter announced Saturday evening that he has
dropped out of the race for his party’s presidential nomination.
Hunter spoke to a group of campaign volunteers, supporters and
friends, at the very spot on the San Diego Pier where he first
announced his presidential ambitions in October 2006.
Court rejects BOS
lawsuit against secretary of state
A Superior
Court Judge has issued a tentative ruling rejecting arguments
made by San Diego County officials who sought to avoid complying
with an order by California Secretary of State Debra Bowen to
hand recount 10 percent of ballots in close elections, where
less than one-half of one percent separates the winner from
losing candidates.
GUHSD’s Schreiber part of federal lawsuit
Schreiber is
an individual plaintiff in a federal lawsuit (filed on Nov. 27)
to stop implementation of SB 777, the Student Civil Rights Act,
recently passed by the Democrat-controlled legislature and
signed by the governor.
Cross-border drug tunnel filled with cement
On Friday afternoon, Jan. 11, remediation work was
completed to fill a cross-border drug tunnel. The tunnel was
discovered in Tecate on Dec. 3, 2007, after a Border Patrol
canine unit alerted on a commercial storage trailer 360 yards
north of the International Border. Border Patrol agents found
almost 14,000 pounds of marijuana and an opening to the tunnel
inside the trailer.
Local kids compete at 31st annual Kiwanis Youth Olympics
The 31st annual Kiwanis Youth Olympics was held at
Alpine Elementary School last Saturday, Jan. 19. Athletes began
arriving to register bright and early, and by 9:30 a.m.
approximately 100 children from all the Alpine schools and
beyond had donned their bib numbers and were out competing in
the 12 offered events.
