Canyonfolk house concert
     ALPINE — Local venue, Canyonfolk House Concert, will be hosting a show on Saturday, Feb. 2 with musician John Batdorf, johnbatdorfmusic.com.
     The doors open at 7 p.m. for the dinner/desert potluck with coffee, tea, bottled water, and other beverages. It is not mandatory to contribute but makes for a much tastier buffet when others do. The show begins at 8 p.m. and the seats are $15 suggested donation.

Master conga drummer at library
     DESCANSO — The Descanso Library a Family Program concert will host “Wing,” a Master Conga Drummer.
     Wing has developed a unique program of African and American Song and rhythms with the aid of Conga drums and assorted percussion instruments. Bring your family and friends for this amazing and fun program on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 1 p.m.

Kiwanis to honor local Law Enforcement
     ALPINE — On Feb. 9 at their Saturday Meeting The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will honor local Law Enforcement, The San Diego Sheriff’s Department, The California Highway Patrol and The U.S. Border Patrol.
     Each year the Kiwanis Club proclaims a Law Enforcement Appreciation Day in which they recognize the above Departments choice as Law Enforcement Deputy, Officer and Agent of year. Also present will be Joel Anderson, 77th District Assemblyman who will present each recipient a Resolution from the State of California Legislature.
     The meeting which is held at the Alpine Elementary School Auditorium will be open to all guests to honor our Law Enforcement. For reservations, please call Dick Rabell, Chairman of The Event, at 445-5712.

Relay for Life kick-off
     ALPINE — The third Annual Alpine Relay For Life is kicking off its 2008 signature event. The public is welcome to join the Planning Committee Retreat to be held Saturday morning Feb. 9, 9:30 am at the Vine Bistro- 2502 Alpine Blvd.
     Relay For Life is a unique 24-hour celebration of cancer survivorship and a tribute to those who have lost their battle. The event attracts survivors, their family members and friends who are strongly committed to the community and the fight against cancer. In Alpine, hundreds of local supporters will raise funds in 2008 for the American Cancer Society.
     Anyone that is interested in being a part of this wonderful community’s history is welcome to join the committee. This will be an informal meeting to discuss the details of the committee positions.

Sunrise Powerlink EIR hearings
     MTN. EMPIRE — Several hearings will be coming up in the near future to allow residents to get more information and ask questions of specialists for the SDG&E Sunrise Powerlink project, after the release of the Draft Environmental Impact Report on Jan. 3.
     An Administrative Law Judge Public Participation Hearing will be held at MEHS on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m. This will be an opportunity for residents to go on legal record with their comments.

Easter Egg hunt and bicycle rodeo
     CAMPO — It is time for the Campo VFW Post 2080 to host the annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bicycle Rodeo. “Easter” will come early for this event on Saturday, March 1
     The whole community is invited for this fun event with the Easter Egg Hunt beginning at noon and the Bicycle Rodeo starting at 1 p.m.

Ol’ Man River heard at Library
     ALPINE — Paul Robeson, the actor who sang Ol’ Man River on the stage and in the film Showboat, will be featured during a 90-minute program honoring Black History Month at the Alpine Library on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m.
     Robeson began acting on the stage in 1924 and shortly thereafter his career blossomed into film. Paul Robeson was also controversial. He was vocal about the treatment of blacks in America and an advocate of communism.
     Attendees will hear the rich deep singing voice of Robeson, listen to his words about Peace and Equality, learn why the United States revoked his passport, and be able to participate in a discussion about Paul Robeson’s life. The program is co-sponsored by the Alpine Library and the Alpine Library Friends Association (ALFA).

Meet the Lost Boys of Sudan
     PINE VALLEY — Meet the Author of “They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky,” Benjamin Ajak with Judy Bernstein at the Pine Valley Library on Feb. 5 at 6 p.m. to discuss this book that examines true life experiences of the Lost Boys of Sudan along with a slide presentation.
     Benjamin Ajak fled as a lost boy at the age of five and now at the age of 25 resides in San Diego. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library and the Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council.

Alpine historical quarterly meeting
     ALPINE –The Alpine Historical Society will hold its quarterly potluck luncheon meeting on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd. Members, their guests and others interested in the history of Alpine are invited to attend.
     Vonnie Sanchez, who arrived in Alpine at the age of eleven months will be the featured speaker. Alpine’s excellent climate attracted Vonnie’s parents to our town in hopes of improving her father’s health. It worked—and Vonnie has spent her entire life among Alpine’s rolling hills and country roads. She has been an employee of The Alpine Sun for fourteen years and is currently the Assistant Publisher.

Blood bank visits
     EL CAJON — The San Diego Blood Bank will accept blood donations at an open to the public blood drive hosted by Granite Hills High School, 1719 E Madison Ave., El Cajon, on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the Gym.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation. For donor requirements or to make an appointment, call the San Diego Blood Bank at 1-800-4MY-SDBB or visit www.sandiegobloodbank.org.
