Local elections change the
faces of some area boards
By Christy Scott
The Alpine Sun
The local Nov. 4 election made little
difference in most Congressional and Assembly positions,
however, many local community boards and groups saw big
overhauls. Voters in some areas chose to change boards and
potentially policies completely, while some politicians remained
safe in their incumbent seats.
The east county’s congressional seats went to incumbent
Bob Filner, who will continue to represent the 51st District,
and new Congressman Duncan D. Hunter. Filner won handily with 72
percent of voters supporting him. Hunter continues in his
father’s footsteps, taking up the seat he held for 28 years. The
younger Hunter, also an Alpine resident, won the seat with 57
percent of the vote.
Local 77th District Assemblyman Joel Anderson retained
his seat on the State body, winning more than 55 percent of the
vote.
Local candidate for the County Board of Education, Rose
Urdahl, unfortunately lost her bid for the seat to rival Mark
Anderson.
The Mountain Empire Unified School District Board saw
changes on two seats as Bill Troutt was elected as the Trustee
for Area 1, ousting incumbent Georgette Gallardo, with 58
percent of the vote. The Area 6 Trustee seat went to Tina
Hiemerdinger, with 58 percent of the vote. Jeff Morrison,
Trustee Area 2, and Trina Ambrose, Trustee Area 7, won their
seats without contest.
The Grossmont Union High School District board will
undergo some changes as current board president Larry Urdahl
lost his bid for reelection, with only 19 percent of the vote.
Priscilla Schreiber will retain her seat on the board (23
percent), and will be joined by Gary Woods, who won 27 percent
of the vote.
The Alpine Union School District board will remain
unchanged with Mark Price and Ann Pierce holding on to their
seats.
The Alpine Fire Protection Board seats went to Ron
Fuller, with 35 percent of the vote, and Steve Kramer, with 18
percent of the vote.
In a full race for seats on the Boulevard Community
Planning Group, the top four honors go to one-time APG member
Cheryl Lenz, with 17 percent of the vote; Chris Noland, 16
percent; Bill Parsons, 15 percent; and Jeffrey Mc Kernan, 15
percent.
The Campo-Lake Morena Community Planning Group that
will take the reins in the new year will look quite different
than the current board, with five new faces filling contest
seats. Long-time members Larry Johnson, Joe Carmody and Shirley
Driscoll-Perkiss lost their bids for reelection. New members are
Mitchell Sanchez (11 percent), Kristi Kor (10 percent), Paige
McAllister (10 percent), Tammy Inman (10 percent), and Brandon
Will (10 percent).
The Pine Valley Community Planning group will see
little change with Jeff Strohminger, Bob Smith and Story Richard
Vogel winning local seats. In uncontested elections the Guatay
area seats go to John Grisafi and Warren Larkin, and the Mount
Laguna seat goes to Thomas McNicol.
Seats on the San Diego Rural Fire Protection board were won by
Larry Baldwin, Louis Russo, and Dale Amato.
No-contest contests
Several local races weren’t even on the ballot on Nov.
4, as many didn’t have enough candidates running. In these
cases, all of the candidates running will fill seats on these
boards.
