ALFA bookstore holiday hours
ALPINE — The ALFA Bookstore will be closed on Nov. 27 and 28, Thanksgiving day and Friday. It will be open on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 29 and 30 for the End of the Month Sale. Beginning Dec. 3, the bookstore will close at 4 p.m. every day for the winter months. See you soon in our cozy store.
Prices rarely over $3 a book. The bookstore is located at 2554 Alpine Blvd and is open Wednesday through Sunday. All proceeds support your Public Library. Call 722-1277 for more information.

Holiday toy drive
ALPINE — The Alpine Fire Department will be accepting unwrapped items for the annual Holiday toy drive beginning the week of Nov. 17, up until Dec. 20.
The barrel will be in the lobby of the Fire Station at 1364 Tavern Road.

Urban survival workshop
ALPINE — On Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the Alpine Chamber of Commerce hosts a free Urban Survival Workshop at Joan Mac Queen Middle School. Be prepared for any disaster.

Viejas ice rink and tree-lighting
ALPINE — Viejas Outlet Center officially kicks-off the holiday season this weekend with the opening of the Viejas Outlet Center ice rink, holiday tree lighting, and the return of the Legend of the Ice Princess.
The Viejas Outlet Center rink will be open to the public through Jan. 4. For $12, skaters will enjoy 90 minutes of skating, which includes skate rental (military discounts available). The rink will be open nightly until 10 p.m. and will open at 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Log onto www.shopviejas.com for specific hours of operation.
On Saturday, Nov. 22 Viejas presents its holiday tree lighting. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. in the Outlet Center Park area and will feature a live, choreographed ice show, the lighting of the 87-foot tree and a visit from Santa Claus.
The night concludes with the first public performance of the Legend of the Ice Princess at 7:30 p.m. in the Show Court. All performances are free and open to the public.

Field show
extravaganza
EL CAJON — The Grossmont Union High School District will hold a Marching Band and Color Guard Field Show Extravaganza at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Valhalla High School Stadium.
The event will feature performances from local high schools. Tickets are $7 for adults, free for children 10 and under.

Alpine Thanksgiving
On Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 7 p.m. pastors and members of the Alpine Churches will gather together to offer their thanks. This year’s service will be held at Bethel Christian Assembly, 1929 Arnold Way at Tavern Road. The Alpine Christian Ministerial Association organizes the service where we can come together as a community of faith and thank God.

Soroptimist volunteers
ALPINE — Are you a young woman age 14-17 who volunteers in your community or school? Soroptimist International of Alpine wants to honor you for your volunteer action. We are looking for young women to apply for our Violet Richardson Award.
The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and the world a better place through volunteer efforts.

Alpine Christmas Festival
ALPINE — The Alpine Village Christmas Parade of Lights & Snow Festival is Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m. Reserve your spot in the Christmas songbook and wish your clients and customers happy holidays. The Christmas songbook will be distributed in local businesses and at the parade.
Help spread holiday cheer on Alpine Boulevard and Tavern Road by sponsoring a street banner. The street banners promote the Alpine Village Christmas Parade of Lights & Snow Festival. The Holiday banners will decorate the streets from November 2008 til January 2009.

A Question of Power screenings
ALPINE — Two local screenings of “A Question of Power,” a documentary about the Sunrise Powerlink, will be held in coming weeks for residents who will likely be affected by the huge transmission line.
On Thursday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Boulevard Community Center, 39919 Highway 94 (corner of Ribbonwood Road and Old Hwy 80); as well as Friday, Nov. 21, at the Alpine Community Center, 7 p.m. residents can watch the film, a one hour documentary presenting analysis and comments on the impact of the Sunrise Powerlink project on the Back Country and East County. The California Public Utilities Commission may vote on the powerlink as early as Dec. 4.
“A Question of Power” is Produced by Donna Tisdale, President of Backcountry Against Dumps (BAD) and Chair of the Boulevard Planning Group.

Long’s Drugs grand opening
ALPINE — The new Alpine Long’s Drugs, located at Creekside Center, will host a Grand Opening this Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 a.m. There will be a promotion from 4 – 8 p.m. There will also be a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 22, at noon.

Book Fair
ALPINE — Joan Mac Queen Middle School will host its Scholastic Book Fair beginning Friday. Nov. 21, which is also Shadow-A-Student day at JMMS in the library.
The book fair will continue when students return from Thanksgiving vacation. The fair will open on Nov.21 and reopen again when school resumes on Dec.1. Hours are Monday, Dec. 1 – Friday, Dec. 5 from 7:15 a.m. — 3 p.m.)

Census office opening
DESCANSO — Early local Census Office Opening in San Diego. The Census Bureau will be testing for Clerical and Field Positions on Nov. 20, at the Descanso Library for opening positions.
The bureau is now hiring office clerks and field staff, with salaries beginning at $11.25 an hour to $17 an hour. A written exam and U.S. citizenship is required.

Museums open Thanksgiving weekend
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Museum will be open to the public on Saturday, Nov. 29 and Sunday, Nov. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m.
This is a great opportunity to go back in time and learn more about Historic Alpine from several knowledgeable docents. The two historic buildings are owned and operated by the Alpine Historical Society. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

ACC winter
tennis classes
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center (ACC) will offer winter tennis classes starting Dec. 1.
Youth tennis classes will be offered in the afternoons for both beginners and advanced students. Also, a special training program will be conducted for high school student athletes aspiring to compete in the upcoming Grossmont High School league season.
Regular winter tennis clinics for adults will be held during weekdays. Players may select either morning or evening classes.

Harbison Canyon Lions Christmas Party
ALPINE — The Harbison Canyon Lion would like to invite you to their Community Christmas Party, Dec. 6, 3-6 p.m. at the Old Ironsides County Park, at 326 Harbison Canyon Road.
Santa arrives at 3 p.m., with gifts and pictures for the children. The Alpine Chorale will be performing at 4 p.m.

Holiday home tour
ALPINE — The Alpine Woman’s Club will hold its Christmas in Alpine Home Tour on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants will have an opportunity to stroll through five stunning country estates, a 1930’s barn, now used as a church, plus three historic buildings, including the Alpine Museum and the Town Hall.
Pre-ticket sales for the tour are only $20. After Nov. 25 they will be $25. You can purchase tickets at the Alpine Woman’s Club 2156 Alpine Blvd on Saturdays, Nov. 22nd, Nov. 29 and Dec.6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
