Personal attacks take precedence at candidate forum
     Echoes of previous election tactics rang throughout during the Oct. 6 Grossmont High School District Board Candidate Forum held in La Mesa, by the League of Women Voters of East San Diego County.   

Three candidates vie for seats on local school board     
     Three candidates are running for election to the Alpine Union School District Board. Ann Pierce along with Mark Price is running for re-election and Bill Weaver, long time advocate for students is vying for one of the seats. All three of these candidates are well-known Alpine community members, and their community service has been long recognized.
 

GUHSD’s Prop U gains more support  
     The Yes on Proposition U — East County Neighbors for Safe Schools campaign announced the endorsements of San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob and the San Diego County Taxpayers Association.   

Dulzura man pleads guilty to molestation
A Dulzura man pleaded guilty Oct. 1 to molesting three girls under the age of 13 and could face a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison.  

Spicy times in Alpine at chili cook-off
The aroma of the Southwest wafted on the air as community members hustled down to the Alpine Community Park for the Seventh Annual Kiwanis Chili Cook-off. This year, in addition to the delectable array of chili recipes, a vintage car show was in full swing. 
 
It’s fire prevention week: Are you prepared for a fire emergency?  
Fires and burns are the third leading cause of unintentional home injury and related deaths. More than 4,000 Americans die each year in fires and approximately 20,000 are injured. Oct. 5-11, 2008 is Fire Prevention Week – a great time to be sure you and those around you know how to stay safe from fire.

Fire chief appointed at AFPD
On Sept. 11, the Board of Directors of the Alpine Fire Protection District (AFPD) announced the appointment of Bill F. Paskle as the new Fire Chief.

Orphaned fox pups released into the wild
In a joint effort, Project Wildlife and Lions Tigers and Bears released seven orphaned gray foxes on the 93-acre Lions Tigers and Bears’ Big Cat rescue ranch on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

Campo Creek bridge repair
Closures of State Route 94 Between Forest Gate and Sheridan Roads are scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 6, to allow crews to make emergency repairs to the Campo Creek Bridge. Repairs will take approximately one month to complete, according to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).
