Campo/Lake Morena community planning
     CAMPO — The Campo/Lake Morena Planning Group has established a new Ad-hoc Subcommittee to develop a new Community Plan for their area. This Community Plan will become a part of the new General Plan Update that San Diego County has been working on for several years.
     The Subcommittee will be meeting once a week in August and September on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Lake Morena Community Church, located at 29765 Oak Dr. in Lake Morena. The meetings are open to the public. Other meetings will be scheduled later. An Agenda is posted locally at the Campo Post office, Cameron Corners Market, La Posta Diner and the Lake Morena Market at least 72 hours before the scheduled meeting.

Alpine Country Arts & Crafts
     ALPINE — The 15th Annual Craft and Harvest Festival will be held on Oct. 9, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Oct. 10, 11, and 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Women’s Club.
     There will be festive foods from the kitchen as well as crafts and handmade items. Credit cards are not accepted, so please bring cash to this event.

The 15th annual Fire Department open house
     ALPINE — On Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 1364 Tavern Road, Alpine, the Alpine Firefighters are presenting fun for the entire family at their annual open house. There will be fire and rescue demonstrations, public safety information, child I.D. and fingerprinting as well as prizes! There is also a huge raffle for 2 kids bikes donated by Wal Mart. Refreshments will be available courtesy of Daniel’s Market.

21st Mountain Empire Reunion picnic
     PINE VALLEY — Mountain Empire alumni will celebrate the Class of 1958's Golden Years at a class reunion on Saturday Oct. 11, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pine Valley Community Park.

Drug Awareness presentation
     EL CAJON — Los Coches Creek Middle School presents a parent and teacher Drug Awareness Presentation by PRONASA, on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the school, 9669 Dunbar Lane El Cajon.

Waste collection
CAMPO — On Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a household hazardous, electronic and universal waste collection event at the County of San Diego Campo Road Station located at 970 Forrest Gate Road in Campo.
Materials to be collected may include household cleaners, solvents, paint products, automotive fluids, pool chemicals pesticides, used oil, aerosols, batteries, fluorescent lights, television and computer monitors and sharps (needles and lancets). They will not be accepting business waste, tires, explosives or radioactive materials.

Cowboy Barbecue
ALPINE — A Cowboy barbecue and square dance will be held at the Anglican Paradise Ranch, 2301 So. Grade Rd. This is Christ our Saviour's second annual event., to be held on Saturday, Oct. 18., starting at 2:30 p.m.
The barbecue dinner will begin at 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 per Adult & $5 for children 6-12. Tickets are on sale now and must be purchased or reserved in advance by calling our church office at 722-1575.

Annual English tea
     ALPINE — Christ the King Episcopal Church will host its annual English Tea on Saturday Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. at 1460 Midway Dr. Alpine, CA 91901.
     Don't miss this enjoyable afternoon tea served in a lovely courtyard setting, accented with a water fountain, along with the soothing sounds of harpist Sylvia Lorraine Hartman. Wear your favorite fancy hat for a chance to win a prize, along with other prize opportunities.

Alpine Woman’s Club luncheon
     ALPINE — Since the Alpine Woman’s Club first started in 1914, membership has been by invitation only. For the first time in the Club’s history they are opening their October luncheon to the ladies of Alpine and the surrounding areas.
     The luncheon is free for guests and will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 12 p.m. at the Historic Town Hall, 2156 Alpine Blvd. The program that day will be presented by renowned Psychic Reader Laura Zibalese.
     The purpose of the club is to preserve and maintain the Town Hall, which was built in 1899, to promote a spirit of community cooperation and to engage in all manner of charitable, social, educational and recreational endeavors conducive to the public welfare. If you are interested in learning more about the club, this would be an excellent opportunity to join them for lunch. Space is limited.

4th annual arts festival
     ALPINE — The 4th Annual East County Performing Arts and Fall Festival is fast approaching, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center Park.
     The theme of this year's festival is "Performing Arts," so we invite your students or group to perform at this exciting community Festival. Also, since this special event will occur on the last Saturday before Halloween, we are including a costume parade and contest for anyone who would like to dress up in the spirit of Halloween.
     There will be several free activities throughout the day, including a pinewood race car derby, with participants painting and racing their own 8-inch race car along a 32 foot track, free art activities, prizes, food, music, dancers, dramatic presentations, and fun for all.
     CYNA is also proud to debut a "Calendar Art Contest" for students in grades K - 12 this year. The theme for this calendar is "Alpine's History and Natural Heritage," and we hope to have some great cash prizes for 12 first place winners. Each student should create two-dimensional, 8.5" x 11" artwork, by Oct. 3, for the month that corresponds to their grade level. For example, first grade would make a January theme; second graders will create a February theme, etc.
     Prizes will be awarded on the stage at the Art Festival at 4 p.m.

Essay contest
     High school students nationwide are invited to participate in the 2008-2009 "Being an American" Essay Contest, which explores the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. The contest offers cash prizes totaling more than $189,000 to both students and their teachers. Top prize winners and their teachers also receive all-expenses paid trips to the nation's capital.
     To participate, students are asked to share their thoughts on American citizenship by answering the following question: "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?" The names of the top three prize winners in each of nine regions will be announced at a special Washington, DC Awards Gala in the spring of 2009. The first place winners in each region, and their sponsoring teachers, will receive $5,000 cash awards; second place winners $2,500 and third place winners $1,250.
     Eligible students are in grades 9-12 who are U.S. citizens or legal residents and are either attending public, private, religious, or charter schools, being home-schooled, or participating in a GED or correspondence school program but are no older than 19 years of age.

ALPINE — Home winemakers of Alpine: Are you interested in starting a club of local home winemakers? Or, did you always want to learn how to make wine or grow grapes?

Thanksgiving in song
     ALPINE — Thanksgiving in Song, a community music program, is inviting all Alpine vocalists to participate in the combined choir created by eight local churches. They will present the concert on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Alpine Community Church.
     The music chosen for the event is interdenominational in feeling and very enjoyable according to the two well-known local musicians, Sylvia Hartman and Joan Waterworth, who are organizing the event. Tim Lutz, an experienced choir director from Orange County, will be the guest conductor.
     Rehearsals have already begun with singers offered a choice of Tuesday evenings from 7 to 7:45 p.m. at the Community Church or most Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Church. It is not necessary for singers to attend every rehearsal between now and Nov. 2.
     A children’s choir will also perform a rousing arrangement of “This Little Light of Mine.” A string quartet and a harp will accompany one of the choir numbers.
     Singers interested in participating in this fun event are urged to call either Hartman at 445-8942 or Waterworth at 659-3946 for more information about rehearsals.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
     ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could use toothbrushes, men's and woman's white socks and hairbrushes, and under garments. Ronald McDonald House, next to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital is always in need of these donations.
     Ronald McDonald House houses families who have critically ill children in Rady’s Children’s Hospital.
Alpine resident and Kiwanian, Dick Rabell began an effort last year, collecting and donating these items to Ronald McDonald House and they are very happy with Alpine’s collection efforts. Items can be bagged and dropped off at The Alpine Sun office.

ALFA bookstore
     ALPINE — The Alpine Library Friends Bookstore will now sell all paperback romance novels for 25 cents each or 5 for a $1. We are receiving so many great donations of newer books that we need to make more shelf space for them.
     Remember, all books are a real bargain at your ALFA store – most ranging from $1 to $3. The Children’s area is full of great new donations as well as books for Halloween.
The bookstore is located at 2554 Alpine Blvd and is open Wednesday through Sunday. All proceeds support your Public Library. 619 722-1277.

Free smoke alarms for seniors
     The Burn Institute, community volunteers and members of the Fire Service will take part in a collaborative effort to install lifesaving smoke alarms for qualified San Diego County seniors on Saturdays during the month of September.
     Burn Institute staff will join with a dedicated team community volunteers to install free smoke alarms in the homes of local seniors. Seniors residing within San Diego County who are 65 years or older, own their own home and do not have a working smoke alarm qualify for this free life-saving program.

Campo goes Hog Wild
     CAMPO — It’s Hog Wild time again in Campo, so mark your calendar. Saturday Oct. 11, Campo’s VFW Auxiliary will host, once again, a fun filled day for the public.
     All are invited. Proceeds will go to various veterans charities, including the National Home for Children that provides long and short term residency to children and grandchildren of VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members.
     This year Hog Wild features live music from “Blue Dawg” from 1-5 p.m., a deep pit barbecue with a host of side dishes from noon to 6 p.m., bake sale, silent auction, raffles, liquid refreshment, including beer and soft drinks.

Horsecamp Expo
    ANZA BORREGO — The Winchester Widows will be having their inaugural Horsecamp Expo at the beautiful Butterfield Ranch Resort in the Anza-Borrego Desert, on Oct. 11.
     There will be a poker ride, vendors, swimming pool, a catered BBQ and dance. Camping space is available, with or without hook-ups. There are also cabins and horse corrals available to rent. Prices start at $45 per rig for the weekend, which includes dry camping, one barbecue ticket and poker hand. Extra tickets are reasonably priced.

Disney Quiz Night
     ALPINE — Hurry and get your tickets for Disney Quiz Night! On Wednesday, Oct. 15, the annual fundraiser to benefit Creekside Early Learning Center will take place in the Dreamcatcher Lounge at Viejas.
     Mexican styled Hors D’oeuvres will be served, along with a no host bar, during the night of competitive games of sports, music and Disney trivia. Some of the auction items include a vacation condo in Rosarito, a Child’s dream birthday party, and a southern California theme park package.

Christian Poetry Contest
     ALPINE - A $1,000 grand prize is being offered in a special poetry contest sponsored by Christian Poets Guild, free to everyone. There are 50 prizes in all totaling $5,000.
     To enter, send one poem of 21 lines or less to Free Poetry Contest, 1638 Dogwood Ln., Acworth, GA 30102, or enter online at www.freecontest.com. The deadline for entering is October 18, 2008.
     Poems may be written on any subject using any style. “A typical poem,” says contest Director Cecilia Gica, “might be a love poem, or nature poem, one that inspires the reader.”

Halloween party
     ALPINE — Calling all dads and moms, doting grandparents, aunts and uncles, and good neighbor friends: You are all invited to a potluck dinner and Halloween Party on Oct. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Fuller Hall at the Alpine Community Church.
     Get dressed up in your craziest Halloween outfit or come as you are and enjoy the costume parade, lots of games and spooky fun for the youngsters plus friendly fellowship for the adults.
    Just bring your favorite potluck dish to share, like a casserole, salad or dessert. Drinks will be provided along with the usual Halloween candy.

A night of dancing
     ALPINE — Come and dance the night away on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center. Music performed by the band Good Mojo, along with appetizers and a no host bar.
