Campo-Lake Morena community planning
     CAMPO — The Campo/Lake Morena Planning Group has established a new Ad-hoc Subcommittee to develop a new Community Plan for their area. This Community Plan will become a part of the new General Plan Update that San Diego County has been working on for several years.
     The Subcommittee will be meeting once a week in August and September on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Lake Morena Community Church, located at 29765 Oak Dr. in Lake Morena. The meetings are open to the public. Other meetings will be scheduled later. An Agenda is posted locally at the Campo Post office, Cameron Corners Market, La Posta Diner and the Lake Morena Market at least 72 hours before the scheduled meeting.

Deep pit barbecue
     ALPINE — The Alpine Bert Fuller VFW Post #9578, at 844 Tavern Road, is hosting its Annual Deep Pit Barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m.
     This event is open to the public. Advance ticket donation $10, tickets the day of the barbecue $12. Call 445-6040 for tickets.
     There will be live music and great food. Also at 3 p.m. The Post and The Ladies Auxiliary will be having a special fundraising live auction.

Concert on the grass
     ALPINE — A free concert will take place Saturday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., at JK Corral, 2442-2530 Alpine Blvd.

Coffee with constituents
     ALPINE — County Supervisor Dianne Jacob will be in Alpine for a “Coffee with Constituents” on Thursday, Sept. 25, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the Alpine Inn, 2225 Alpine Blvd, Alpine.
     If you have any ideas, problems or concerns regarding County government, or if your friends, family or neighbors have any concerns, this is a perfect opportunity. All residents are invited to attend.

Kiwanis installation
     ALPINE — On Saturday, Sept. 27, the Alpine Kiwanis will install and honor this year’s president, Dan Foster, the retiring president, Richard Higgins, and the other club officers at a dinner and dance at the Alpine Community Center.
     The event will start with a no-host social time at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature a patriotic theme and the dress is business.
     Tickets are $35 each and are only available pre-sale, from Dave at 445-0532. The Alpine Community Center is located at 1830 Alpine Blvd.

Wildfire preparation assistance
     ALPINE — Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council are hosting a series of Free Community Chipper days throughout Alpine.
     On Saturday, Sept. 27, Viejas Properties is hosting a chipping day in eastern Alpine at 5221 Willows Rd. All of these events will begin at 8 a.m. and chipping will cease at 1 p.m. promptly. On chipper days, residents are invited to call 244-6093 for estimated wait times.
     Participants must show proof of Alpine area residency and are responsible for transporting materials to the chipping site. Dumping in advance is not allowed, and materials must be free of dirt, rocks, construction debris and other trash. No brush from businesses or professional landscapers will be accepted.

Canyonfolk concert
     ALPINE — Canyonfolk house concerts presents Singer Songwriter Sarah Petite on Saturday, Oct. 4, and the suggested donation is $15. This will be an inside show.
     The doors open at 7 p.m. for the Dinner/Dessert Potluck Buffet and the Show will begin at 8 p.m. We will provide a main course and contributions to the buffet are always welcomed but not mandatory. We also provide bottled water, coffee, tea, as well as some beer and wine. As always we truly do appreciate when others bring some beer or wine to share with all.

Calling all musicians
     CAMPO — Smart Energy Festival is coming to Campo. A Sustainable, Manageable, Alternative, Renewable Technology is the topic to learn about as an alternative to the Sunrise Powerlink Project. Come and join us on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. — 4 p.m. at Sandy Creek Ranch on the La Posta Truck Trail.
     Enjoy local food and music while learning what we can do to avoid the tower below running through your neighborhood. Suggested donation is $10 per person, and children under 12 years old are free. All proceeds will go towards the Protect Our Communities Fund at The San Diego Foundation. Donations are tax-deductible.

Essay contest
     High school students nationwide are invited to participate in the 2008-2009 “Being an American” Essay Contest, which explores the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. The contest offers cash prizes totaling more than $189,000 to both students and their teachers. Top prize winners and their teachers also receive all-expenses paid trips to the nation’s capital.
     To participate, students are asked to share their thoughts on American citizenship by answering the following question: “What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?” The names of the top three prize winners in each of nine regions will be announced at a special Washington, DC Awards Gala in the spring of 2009. The first place winners in each region, and their sponsoring teachers, will receive $5,000 cash awards; second place winners $2,500 and third place winners $1,250.
     Eligible students are in grades 9-12 who are U.S. citizens or legal residents and are either attending public, private, religious, or charter schools, being home-schooled, or participating in a GED or correspondence school program but are no older than 19 years of age.

Bloodmobile visits
     The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will accept blood donations at an open to the public blood drives at various local spots in the coming months.
     The bloodmobile will be hosted Mountain Empire Jr. Sr. High School, 3305 Buckman Springs Rd., Pine Valley, 91962, Monday, Sept. 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the Gym.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation. For donor requirements or to make an appointment, call the San Diego Blood Bank at 1-800-4MY-SDBB or visit www.sandiegobloodbank.org.

DC Trip meeting
     ALPINE — On Thursday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. in the Alpine Elementary School auditorium, a registration meeting and DVD presentation will be held by Holt Travel & Tours to share information with Joan Mac Queen 8th grade students and parents about next year’s annual educational East Coast tour.
     The historical and educational destinations are Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, the Amish Country, and New York City. Fund raising opportunities will also be discussed after this meeting.
     This exciting 8-day trip will take place during the first week of Spring Break on April 4 through 11. The tour participants will see famous historical landmarks in places such as George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon and Philadelphia. Other highlights include Smithsonian Institution, the memorials in Washington, D.C., and a special wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The working farm in the Amish Country and the country store will be quite interesting and perhaps a highlight for some. Perhaps the most exciting part of the trip will be the three days and two nights spent in New York City.

Evening of art
     DESCANSO — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council presents a special evening of art, to be held Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m., at the home of Dr. Donald & Marcia Adema of Descanso.
     The event will include the unveiling of a 1,500-piece Tiffany-inspired stained glass window designed and created by pine Valley artist Keith Barrett. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served, and live classical music will be featured. Semi-formal attire is appropriate.

Museum tours
     ALPINE — The Alpine Museum will be open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday the 28th from 2 to 4 p.m.
     Please feel free to bring your children. This is a great opportunity to go back in time and learn more about historic Alpine from several knowledgeable docents. The two historic buildings owned and operated by the Alpine Historical Society are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House built in 1896 and the Capt. Adam Beaty house built in 1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

     ALPINE — The Alpine Viejas Days Parade and band review will take place along Alpine Boulevard on Saturday, Oct. 4, beginning at 9 a.m. The Alpine Stagecoach Lions invite you to join the parade.

7th Annual Chili Festival
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis will host the 7th Annual Chili Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center Park, following the Viejas Day Parade.
     For a $10 admission visitors can sample the chilis, enjoy live music by the Ideals, visit the adults-only, cash only Beer Garden area, examine the Motor Bike and Car Show, and partake in food, drinks, and fun for the kids. This early fall event is a great way to spend time after the parade.
    Organizers are looking for Chili cookers (limited space), $20 entree fee. Call Jim at 890-2283 or Don at 672-4269 for application or more information. A night of dancing
     ALPINE — Come and dance the night away on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center. Music performed by the band Good Mojo, along with appetizers and a no host bar.
     Tickets are on sale now for $15 per person or $25 per couple, it will be $20 per person at the door on the night of the event. For more information please call 445-7330.

Campo Harvest Festival
     CAMPO — Mountain Health will host a harvest festival on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
     Sign up to be included in our Harvest Festival and join in the festivities. We are looking for crafters, businesses, health agencies, local growers, food vendors and entertainers to participate in this event.
     The Southern Pacific Railroad Museum will be offering one-hour rides with free pumpkins and the Motor Transport Museum will be open for viewing. Amateur photographers are encouraged to submit their photos for our Campo Photo Contest.

Alpine Woman’s Club luncheon
     ALPINE — Since the Alpine Woman’s Club first started in 1914, membership has been by invitation only. For the first time in the Club’s history they are opening their October luncheon to the ladies of Alpine and the surrounding areas.
     The luncheon is free for guests and will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 12 p.m. at the Historic Town Hall, 2156 Alpine Blvd. The program that day will be presented by renowned Psychic Reader Laura Zibalese.
     The purpose of the club is to preserve and maintain the Town Hall, which was built in 1899, to promote a spirit of community cooperation and to engage in all manner of charitable, social, educational and recreational endeavors conducive to the public welfare. If you are interested in learning more about the club, this would be an excellent opportunity to join them for lunch. Space is limited.
