Bloodmobile visits
     The San Diego Blood Bank bloodmobile will accept blood donations at an open to the public blood drives at various local spots in the coming months.
     The bloodmobile will be hosted Mountain Empire Jr. Sr. High School, 3305 Buckman Springs Rd., Pine Valley, 91962, Monday, Sept. 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The blood drive will be held in the Gym.
     Anyone who is at least 17 years old, in good health and weighs at least 110 pounds may be eligible to give blood. A good meal is recommended prior to donation. For donor requirements or to make an appointment, call the San Diego Blood Bank at 1-800-4MY-SDBB or visit www.sandiegobloodbank.org.

Deep pit barbecue
     ALPINE — The Alpine Bert Fuller VFW Post #9578, at 844 Tavern Road, is hosting its Annual Deep Pit Barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m.
     This event is open to the public. Advance ticket donation $10, tickets the day of the barbecue $12. Call 445-6040 for tickets.
     There will be live music and great food. Also at 3 p.m. The Post and The Ladies Auxiliary will be having a special fundraising live auction.

Concert on the grass
     ALPINE — A free concert will take place Saturday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., at JK Corral, 2442-2530 Alpine Blvd.

Coffee with constituents
     ALPINE — County Supervisor Dianne Jacob will be in Alpine for a “Coffee with Constituents” on Thursday, Sept. 25, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the Alpine Inn, 2225 Alpine Blvd, Alpine.
     If you have any ideas, problems or concerns regarding County government, or if your friends, family or neighbors have any concerns, this is a perfect opportunity. All residents are invited to attend.

British Isle tour

Kiwanis installation
     ALPINE — On Saturday, Sept. 27, the Alpine Kiwanis will install and honor this year’s president, Dan Foster, the retiring president, Richard Higgins, and the other club officers at a dinner and dance at the Alpine Community Center.
     The event will start with a no-host social time at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The event will feature a patriotic theme and the dress is business.
     Tickets are $35 each and are only available pre-sale, from Dave at 445-0532. The Alpine Community Center is located at 1830 Alpine Blvd.

Wildfire preparation assistance
     ALPINE — Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council are hosting a series of Free Community Chipper days throughout Alpine.
     On Saturday, Sept. 27, Viejas Properties is hosting a chipping day in eastern Alpine at 5221 Willows Rd. All of these events will begin at 8 a.m. and chipping will cease at 1 p.m. promptly. On chipper days, residents are invited to call 244-6093 for estimated wait times.
     Participants must show proof of Alpine area residency and are responsible for transporting materials to the chipping site. Dumping in advance is not allowed, and materials must be free of dirt, rocks, construction debris and other trash. No brush from businesses or professional landscapers will be accepted.

Campo candidate forum
     CAMPO — The Mountain Empire Resource Information Taskforce (MERIT) will host a candidate forum at the Mountain Empire Community Center, at 976 Sheridan Road in Campo, on Monday, Sept. 29, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
     The public will have the opportunity to question the candidates for Campo Lake/Morena Planning Group on the issues that interest ressidents. Refreshments will be served and questions will be submitted to the candidates.

7th Annual Chili Festival
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis will host the 7th Annual Chili Festival on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center Park, following the Viejas Day Parade.
     For a $10 admission visitors can sample the chilis, enjoy live music by the Ideals, visit the adults-only, cash only Beer Garden area, examine the Motor Bike and Car Show, and partake in food, drinks, and fun for the kids. This early fall event is a great way to spend time after the parade.
     Organizers are looking for Chili cookers (limited space), $20 entree fee. Call Jim at 890-2283 or Don at 672-4269 for application or more information.      All proceeds go to benefit the Alpine Community Center and the services they provide in the community. Buy your tickets early and you will get $12 worth of tasting coupons for the cost of $10. Come out, bring your family and friends and have some fun.

Campo goes Hog Wild
     CAMPO — It’s Hog Wild time again in Campo, so mark your calendar. Saturday Oct. 11, Campo’s VFW Auxiliary will host, once again, a fun filled day for the public.
     All are invited. Proceeds will go to various veterans charities, including the National Home for Children that provides long and short term residency to children and grandchildren of VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members.
     This year Hog Wild features live music from “Blue Dawg” from 1-5 p.m., a deep pit barbecue with a host of side dishes from noon to 6 p.m., bake sale, silent auction, raffles, liquid refreshment, including beer and soft drinks.

Horsecamp Expo
     ANZA BORREGO — The Winchester Widows will be having their inaugural Horsecamp Expo at the beautiful Butterfield Ranch Resort in the Anza-Borrego Desert, on Oct. 11.
     There will be a poker ride, vendors, swimming pool, a catered BBQ and dance. Camping space is available, with or without hook-ups. There are also cabins and horse corrals available to rent. Prices start at $45 per rig for the weekend, which includes dry camping, one barbecue ticket and poker hand. Extra tickets are reasonably priced.

Alpine Woman’s Club luncheon
     ALPINE — Since the Alpine Woman’s Club first started in 1914, membership has been by invitation only. For the first time in the Club’s history they are opening their October luncheon to the ladies of Alpine and the surrounding areas.
     The luncheon is free for guests and will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 12 p.m. at the Historic Town Hall, 2156 Alpine Blvd. The program that day will be presented by renowned Psychic Reader Laura Zibalese.
     The purpose of the club is to preserve and maintain the Town Hall, which was built in 1899, to promote a spirit of community cooperation and to engage in all manner of charitable, social, educational and recreational endeavors conducive to the public welfare. If you are interested in learning more about the club, this would be an excellent opportunity to join them for lunch. Space is limited.

Thanksgiving in song
     ALPINE — Thanksgiving in Song, a community music program, is inviting all Alpine vocalists to participate in the combined choir created by eight local churches. They will present the holiday concert on Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Alpine Community Church.
     The music chosen for the event is interdenominational in feeling and very enjoyable according to the two well known local musicians, Sylvia Hartman and Joan Waterworth, who are organizing the event. Tim Lutz, an experienced choir director from Orange County, will be the guest conductor.
     Rehearsals have already begun with singers offered a choice of Tuesday evenings from 7 to 7:45 p.m. at the Community Church or most Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Church. It is not necessary for singers to attend every rehearsal between now and Nov. 2.
     A children’s choir will also perform a rousing arrangement of “This Little Light of Mine.” A string quartet and a harp will accompany one of the choir numbers.
     Singers interested in participating in this fun event are urged to call either Hartman at 445-8942 or Waterworth at 659-3946 for more information about rehearsals.

Campo/Lake Morena community planning
     CAMPO — The Campo/Lake Morena Planning Group has established a new Ad-hoc Subcommittee to develop a new Community Plan for their area. This Community Plan will become a part of the new General Plan Update that San Diego County has been working on for several years.
     The Subcommittee will be meeting once a week in August and September on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Lake Morena Community Church, located at 29765 Oak Dr. in Lake Morena. The meetings are open to the public. Other meetings will be scheduled later. An Agenda is posted locally at the Campo Post office, Cameron Corners Market, La Posta Diner and the Lake Morena Market at least 72 hours before the scheduled meeting.

ALFA bookstore
     ALPINE — The Alpine Library Friends Bookstore has recently received several donations of like-new books, which are perfect for summer reading on your vacation, or staycation. They include hard-back mysteries, New York Times bestseller list soft-backs, and several current biographies, as well as children’s books and videos for the whole family to share.
     ALFA bookstore will be holding a half price sale on all regularly priced books on Saturday. Sept. 27 and Sunday, Sept. 28.
     The bookstore, located at 2554 Alpine Blvd. is open Wednesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come find a bargain and support your local library.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
     ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could use toothbrushes, men's and woman's white socks and hairbrushes, and under garments. Ronald McDonald House, next to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital is always in need of these donations.
     Ronald McDonald House houses families who have critically ill children in Rady’s Children’s Hospital.
Alpine resident and Kiwanian, Dick Rabell began an effort last year, collecting and donating these items to Ronald McDonald House and they are very happy with Alpine’s collection efforts. Items can be bagged and dropped off at The Alpine Sun office.

Free smoke alarms for seniors
     The Burn Institute, community volunteers and members of the Fire Service will take part in a collaborative effort to install lifesaving smoke alarms for qualified San Diego County seniors on Saturdays during the month of September.
     Burn Institute staff will join with a dedicated team community volunteers to install free smoke alarms in the homes of local seniors. Seniors residing within San Diego County who are 65 years or older, own their own home and do not have a working smoke alarm qualify for this free life-saving program.

Evening of art
     DESCANSO — The Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council presents a special evening of art, to be held Saturday, Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m., at the home of Dr. Donald & Marcia Adema of Descanso.
     The event will include the unveiling of a 1,500-piece Tiffany-inspired stained glass window designed and created by pine Valley artist Keith Barrett. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served, and live classical music will be featured. Semi-formal attire is appropriate.

National Alpaca Farm Day
     ALPINE — The second Annual National Alpaca Farm Day is fast approaching. Please stop by on Sept. 27 and 28, at one of the East County Ranches that are participating in the event, in Alpine, Crest, Descanso, Dehesa Valley and Jamul. All ranches raise and breed alpacas for their fleece, which is used to create fine garments and accessories.

Museum tours
     ALPINE — The Alpine Museum will be open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Sunday the 28th from 2 to 4 p.m.
     Please feel free to bring your children. This is a great opportunity to go back in time and learn more about historic Alpine from several knowledgeable docents. The two historic buildings owned and operated by the Alpine Historical Society are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House built in 1896 and the Capt. Adam Beaty house built in 1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

Between the Stripes
     ALPINE — Lions, Tigers & Bears invites you to become a part of the lives of the rescued big cats. This year’s Between the Stripes fundraiser is themed Denim and Diamonds and will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 5 p.m.
     This will be a catered event. There will be live and silent auctions, lots of fun, educational events, a band and entertainment. Proceeds from Between the Stripes 2008 will help to get one step closer to our dream of Tiger Trails play area and will also help cover operating expenses, and allow us to continue to improve and provide educational opportunities.

Canyonfolk concert
     ALPINE — Canyonfolk house concerts presents Singer Songwriter Sarah Petite on Saturday, Oct. 4, and the suggested donation is $15. This will be an inside show.
     The doors open at 7 p.m. for the Dinner/Dessert Potluck Buffet and the Show will begin at 8 p.m. We will provide a main course and contributions to the buffet are always welcomed but not mandatory. We also provide bottled water, coffee, tea, as well as some beer and wine. As always we truly do appreciate when others bring some beer or wine to share with all.

Charity Golf Tournament
     EL CAJON —Sycuan will host its 18th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Oct. 9 at the Sycuan Resort, 3007 Dehesa Road, El Cajon.
     The rates are $450 for one player, $1,700 for a foursome, and $2,000 for corporate. Drinks and lunch will be available all throughout the two courses. Registration is at 9:30 a.m., shotgun start is at 11:45 a.m. and Cocktails/dinner and silent auction will be held at 5 p.m. Proceeds will benefit 100 years YWCA San Diego County and Becky’s House.

The 15th annual Fire Department open house
     ALPINE — On Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 1364 Tavern Road, Alpine, the Alpine Firefighters are presenting fun for the entire family at their annual open house. There will be fire and rescue demonstrations, public safety information, child I.D. and fingerprinting as well as prizes! There is also a huge raffle for 2 kids bikes donated by Wal Mart. Refreshments will be available courtesy of Daniel’s Market.

21st Mountain Empire Reunion picnic
     PINE VALLEY — Mountain Empire alumni will celebrate the Class of 1958's Golden Years at a class reunion on Saturday Oct. 11, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pine Valley Community Park.

     ALPINE — Come and dance the night away on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center. Music performed by the band Good Mojo, along with appetizers and a no host bar.

Campo Harvest Festival
     CAMPO — Mountain Health will host a harvest festival on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
     Sign up to be included in our Harvest Festival and join in the festivities. We are looking for crafters, businesses, health agencies, local growers, food vendors and entertainers to participate in this event.
     The Southern Pacific Railroad Museum will be offering one-hour rides with free pumpkins and the Motor Transport Museum will be open for viewing. Amateur photographers are encouraged to submit their photos for our Campo Photo Contest.

10th Annual Evening With the Elected Representatives

4th annual arts festival
     ALPINE — The 4th Annual East County Performing Arts and Fall Festival is fast approaching, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center Park.
     The theme of this year's festival is "Performing Arts," so we invite your students or group to perform at this exciting community Festival. Also, since this special event will occur on the last Saturday before Halloween, we are including a costume parade and contest for anyone who would like to dress up in the spirit of Halloween.
     There will be several free activities throughout the day, including a pinewood race car derby, with participants painting and racing their own 8-inch race car along a 32 foot track, free art activities, prizes, food, music, dancers, dramatic presentations, and fun for all.
     CYNA is also proud to debut a "Calendar Art Contest" for students in grades K - 12 this year. The theme for this calendar is "Alpine's History and Natural Heritage," and we hope to have some great cash prizes for 12 first place winners. Each student should create two-dimensional, 8.5" x 11" artwork, by Oct. 3, for the month that corresponds to their grade level. For example, first grade would make a January theme; second graders will create a February theme, etc.
     Prizes will be awarded on the stage at the Art Festival at 4 p.m.

Essay contest
     High school students nationwide are invited to participate in the 2008-2009 "Being an American" Essay Contest, which explores the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. The contest offers cash prizes totaling more than $189,000 to both students and their teachers. Top prize winners and their teachers also receive all-expenses paid trips to the nation's capital.
     To participate, students are asked to share their thoughts on American citizenship by answering the following question: "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?" The names of the top three prize winners in each of nine regions will be announced at a special Washington, DC Awards Gala in the spring of 2009. The first place winners in each region, and their sponsoring teachers, will receive $5,000 cash awards; second place winners $2,500 and third place winners $1,250.
     Eligible students are in grades 9-12 who are U.S. citizens or legal residents and are either attending public, private, religious, or charter schools, being home-schooled, or participating in a GED or correspondence school program but are no older than 19 years of age.
