ALPINE — Kiwanis International has been serving the
world for over 93 years. Our Alpine Kiwanis Club has been
serving the Community of Alpine for 58 years.
We have sponsored our Local Boy Scout Troop 100 for
over 50 years plus sponsoring over 40 Community Service
Project’s yearly.
With 131 members, the Alpine Kiwanis Club, is the 3rd
largest Club in the California/Hawaii/Nevada District of
Kiwanis International.
Get on the Band Wagon of Community Service by joining
the Alpine Kiwanis Club. The more members we have, the
better service we can provide our Community. We meet every
Saturday at 7 a.m. at the Alpine Elementary School.

Spring events from the Alpine Kiwanis
ALPINE — Each spring the Alpine Kiwanis sponsor three
events that raise over $40,000 for youth projects in the
Alpine community, and Children's Hospital.
The next event is the 2008 Alpine Challenge bike ride
on Saturday, April 25. The ride includes 25 mile novice
routes and up to a 72 mile event that goes from Viejas
Outlet Center to Pine Valley and back. You may register and

The third event is the 18th Annual Vintage Alpine wine
tasting and food event on Sunday, May 3, at Summers Past
Farms at 15602 Olde Highway 80 in East County. Tickets can
be reserved early by going to the Alpine Kiwanis web site

Library Scholarship
DESCANSO—Descanso High School Seniors are invited to
apply for a $1,000 Scholarship sponsored by the Friends of
the Descanso Library. This scholarship will be awarded to a
graduating High School senior who resides in the Descanso
zip code 91916.
Please pick up an application and information at the
Descanso Library located at 9545 River Drive, Descanso.
Closing date for return of completed materials is April 18.
Historical Society luncheon
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society will be having
their quarterly potluck luncheon on Sunday, April 19 at 1
p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd.
This is free and open to the public. At 2 p.m. Dr.
Leland Fetzer will be the featured speaker. He was born in
Salt Lake City, the son of a part-time mine owner, which led
to an early interest and involvement in mines and mining.
Mr. Fetzer’s chief interest has been the history of the
Julian, Banner, and Cuyamaca mountain area.

ALPINE — Mt. Empire Republican Women, serving Alpine,

Open House
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Museum will be
open to the public on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April
26 from 2 to 4 p.m.
There are many events going on in town on April 25.
While you are out and about this is a great opportunity to
tour the museum buildings.
Both historic houses are owned by the Alpine Historical
Society.They are located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow

Merry Mad Hatter Tea
ALPINE — The delightful “Annual Mad Hatter Tea — I’m
Late, I’m Late for a Very Important Date” will be fun for
everyone on Saturday, May 9, in Alpine.
Presented by Soroptimist International of Alpine, the
celebration of the merry “Alice in Wonderland” tea party
raises money to help women and girls in need. A hat parade,
silent auctions, and a 50-50 opportunity drawing highlight
the informal event.
The partying begins at 11:30 a.m. at Fuller Hall to the
rear of the Alpine Community Church at 2225 W. Victoria
Drive in Alpine. The festivities will be over by 3 p.m.
Delicious scones with curd and cream, tasty finger
sandwiches, wonderful desserts, fresh grapes and soothing
tea are included in the ticket price of $40 per person.

Kids' health fair
ALPINE -- Alpine Family Medicine (Mountain Health &
Community Services) will host Kids’ Health Fair on Saturday,
May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2. p.m. at the Alpine Regional
Center located at 1620 Alpine Blvd.
The event is free of charge and will feature health
screenings, games and prizes, music, face painting, arts and
crafts, and an opportunity to meet with pediatrician, Dr.
Shannon Cheffet. Children of all ages are invited.
Train robbery rehearsal
CAMPO -- The Mountain Empire Business Association
(formerly CLMBA) presents the Great Train Robbery full dress
rehearsal, at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum. The
Train departs promptly at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 24.
Guard your belongings and loved ones. Be prepared to
face “The Hole In The Wall Gang”. Tickets are $15 per adult
and $7.50 for children ages 5-15.
The Great Train Robbery and Pit Barbeque is completely
sold out on June 13, but you can still come relive the old

Farmer's market
CAMPO -- The Golden Acorn Casino is pleased to announce
the Farmer’s Market and Spring Fair has been scheduled for

Back Country no-cost chipping
service
DESCANSO —To take advantage of a no-cost chipping
Service for vegetation reduction, please call the Fire Safe
Council 562-0096 to register. Due to limited funding, the
chipping service can only be offered once per property with
a maximum of one day per property.
Please be sure to tell the coordinator that you would
like to have the chipper service, please provide your name,
phone number and address. There is a 6-inch diameter limit
on limbs to be chipped, piles of brush should be no more
than 6 feet high, and please keep all materials free of mud,
rocks, construction wood and other debris.
This service will be offered to the following areas:
Boulevard, Campo/Lake Morena, Corte Madera, Deerhorn Valley,
Descanso, Dehesa, Dulzura, Greater Julian, Jacumba, Jamul,
and several more of our backcountry areas. Please call for

Books at Bargain Prices
DESCANSO—Like to buy used books at bargain prices? Come
in and browse our selection of paperback and hadcover books.
The Friends of the Descanso Library Book Sale is every
Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., located in
the book room behind the Descanso Library. For more

Jewelry making class: The Descanso Library will be
presenting three jewelry-making classes by Mountain
Beadworks in Julian. The first class will be on Saturdays at
10 a.m. The schedule is May 9 and July 18.

Volunteers needed
PINE VALLEY — Horse of the Sun Equestrian Facility, 12
minutes east of Alpine, is in need of immediate volunteers
to help with their Horses Heal Hearts and Team Esteem
Programs. Assistance is needed with horse care and support,
working with children in specialized equine character and
esteem education programs.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to
requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald
house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could
use toothbrushes, men's and woman's white socks and
hairbrushes, and under garments. Ronald McDonald House, next
to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital is always in need of these
donations. Rady’s is also collecting pull-tabs from soda and
beer cans, to be recycled for money.
Ronald McDonald House houses families who have
critically ill children in Rady’s Children’s Hospital.
Kiwanis began an effort last year, collecting and
donating these items to Ronald McDonald House and they are
very happy with Alpine’s collection efforts. Items can be
bagged and dropped off at The Alpine Sun office.
Got an old car you want to get rid of? It must have an
engine, although doesn’t need to be in running order.

your vehicle picked up and donated. Will be auctioned off
and you will be notified.
Earth Day East
ALPINE — There are a host of activities taking place
throughout town on Saturday, April 25, for Alpine’s Earth
Day celebration. Events will be taking place all day. There
will be activities for the whole family.

One year anniversary celebration
ALPINE — The Friends of the Library Bookstore at 2554
Alpine Blvd. will celebrate their first anniversary at this

Photography swap
EL CAJON -- The Grossmont College Photo Club will host
“Photo San Diego,” an event featuring buying, swapping and
selling of used and new photo equipment, from 9 a.m. to 1
p.m. on Saturday, May 9, at the college’s Digital Arts
Building, near Parking Lot #1.
The event is open to the public. Admission is free.
Local residents are invited to bring their old photo
equipment to swap or sell.

Spring gathering
ALPINE -- Southern Indian Health Council, Inc. is
hosting the 3rd annual Spring Gathering on Saturday, May 9

kids, Astro jump, Crafts for the kids, poster contest,
Free t-shirts to the first 200 people, and more! This free
event is to help raise public awareness for the need of

Annual plant sale
DESCANSO -- The Descanso Garden Club’s annual plant
sale will take place at the Descanso library on Saturday,
May 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Offered for sale will be plants-both usual and unusual
-- that thrive in Descanso and in nearby communities such as
Japatul, Guatay, Pine valley, and Alpine. There will also be
free lectures and demonstrations on various gardening
subjects such as composting, tree planting, and container
gardening.

Fourth annual Wellness Fair
CAMPO — The Fourth Annual Mountain Empire Wellness Fair
will be held on Wednesday, May 20 from 4-7 p.m. at the Campo
Elementary School (1654 Buckman Springs Road, Campo).
The "How to Be Healthy" Art Contest will be held in
conjunction with the fair and prizes will be awarded.
The purpose of the wellness fair is to be a fun, interactive
event for Mountain Empire School District families where
they can learn about the healthful resources available in
our community.

Novelty Dog Show to be held at the Viejas Outlet Center on
