Local Cub
Scout hopes to repeat win at SD500 derby

ALPINE — Wyatt Havin is hoping to repeat, or beat, his second
place win at last year’s San Diego 500 Pinewood Derby race,
which will take place at Qualcomm Stadium. For the second year
in a row, eight-year-old Wyatt has taken the top spot in the
local Cub Scout Pack 105 derby, sending him on to the big race,
which takes place at the San Diego — Imperial Council Scout Fair
on April 18.
The San Diego 500 is a district and council-level
pinewood derby race that competes the fastest racers in the San
Diego — Imperial council. These five-ounce cars are constructed
by Cub Scouts who are between 7 and 10 years old and have won
the privilege of representing their Pack at the annual run-off.
Trophies are awarded to the first, second and third place
finishers for each District.
Under the supervision of his parents, Wyatt
constructed, painted and finished both of his winning cars.
“I got to use my dad’s tools,” Wyatt said. “I got to
saw, and use the sander. Then I got to spray paint the car and
paint the logo.”
Wyatt’s Number 10 car is painted with a red “M” on the
front (or “W” depending on how you look at it), similar to that
from Speedracer. Obviously the car is aptly named, as it, and
Wyatt, beat out his fellow Cubs at the Pack 105 derby held last
month.
