Planning Group to weigh in
on high school site selection
By Christy Scott
The Alpine Sun
ALPINE At a meeting held last
Thursday, April 23, members of the Alpine Planning Group were
briefed about the potential sites for the Grossmont Union School
Districts Alpine High School. The informational presentation
was in advance of a request by GUHSD staff that the APG vote on
a preferred site at its regular May meeting.
GUHSD School Construction & Building Services Executive
Director, Bob Kiesling, and 12th High School Facilities Planner
Dena Johnson presented the four potential sites that have been
identified. Option B Wrights Field, is located on the north
side of South Grade Road, east of Tavern Road; Option G
Chocolate Summit, consists of two possible spots on the
northeast end of Chocolate Summit Drive; and Option J the
Lazy-A Ranch is located on south side of Alpine Boulevard, east
of South Grade Road.
According to the project Environmental Impact Report,
which was released at the beginning of the year, option J, the
Lazy-A Ranch is the environmentally superior site for the new
school.
The EIR deals only with the environmental impacts of
the project on these sites, said Kiesling. And the
environmentally superior choice is not the end-all for this
decision. The Grossmont board is going to have to look at many
different factors. These factors include displacement of
residents currently at the site and overall costs, among others.
Sizing up the sites
Option B Wrights Field
Size: 75 acres gross, 49.9 acres net (useable
space), on vacant land. There are no dwellings or residents on
the site. Unmitigatable environmental impacts include the change
in visual character and increased noise, as well as a loss of
MSCP native grassland.
The district looks to save $138,000 with this site, due
to the elimination of three bus routes. The total approximate
cost for Option B is $12 to $13 million.
Option G-1 Chocolate Summit
Size: 72 acres gross, 61.2 acres net, on
residential and agricultural land (former poultry farm). There
are 10 dwellings and about 30 residents who would have to be
displaced on this site. Unmitigatable environmental impacts
include the change in visual character, increased noise and
increased traffic.
The total approximate cost for Option G-1 is $31 to $34
million.
Option G-2 Chocolate Summit
Size: 78 acres gross, 57.3 acres net, on
residential and agricultural land (former poultry farm). There
are two dwellings on this site, with four residents living in
the house on the chicken ranch, and four more living in trailers
on the site. Unmitigatable environmental impacts include the
change in visual character, increased noise and increased
traffic.
The total approximate cost for Option G-2 is $23 to $26
million.
Option J Lazy-A Ranch
Size: 92 acres gross, 47.8 acres net, on
residential, agricultural (horse boarding) and vacant land.
There are six dwellings on this site, which house about 17
people. Unmitigatable environmental impacts include the change
in visual character and increased noise.
The district looks to save $115,000 with this site, due
to the elimination of two bus routes. The total approximate cost
for Option J is $11 to $12 million.
