APG vacancy
ALPINE — The Alpine Planning Group is looking for an interested individual to fill one open seat on the 15-member board. The APG is responsible for advising the county on issues of planning and land-use in the area.
General meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month, 6:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
Interested individuals should attend the next APG meeting on Thursday, Aug. 27, to present themselves as a candidate. For more information please contact APG chairman Dana Zeno at zenofamily@prodigy.net.

ABNA anniversary
ALPINE — The Alpine Business Networking Association will hold its one-year anniversary on Thursday, Aug. 20 at The Vine Wine Bar and Bistro, 2502 Alpine Blvd. Come meet your fellow alpine business professionals and see how the ABNA has grown during the year.
The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $20 which includes hors d'oeuvres and two drink tickets. There will be raffle drawings will be held throughout the entire evening so be sure to get there early and bring your business cards.

Julian Starfest
JULIAN — This year’s Julian Starfest is scheduled for Aug. 20- 23. The four-day Starfest begins on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 3 p.m. To make a camping reservation of any kind, visit JulianStarfest.com
The free public star party and telescope viewing is Saturday, Aug. 22 beginning at sunset. Plan to arrive between 6 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 if you want to attend the free public star party. Telescopes will be provided, but bring your own telescope if you have one.
Tours of the world famous Palomar Observatory are Saturday, Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. and Noon. Seating is very limited and you must pre-register at JulianStarfest.com. Astronomy and science exhibits open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to Sunset.

Wild West Show
and Bull riding
CAMPO — The Hole in the Wall Gang presents A Wild West Show & Bull riding Day in Lake Morena on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m.
This event is a fundraiser to benefit Horsemanship for the Handicapped. The event will take place at El Rancho Grande Bar & Grill Restaurant, 29804 Oak Drive, Campo.

Celebrate East County

Fall tennis season
ALPINE — The Fall tennis season at the Alpine Community Center (ACC) begins Sept. 8. Tennis lessons for all age groups and player ability levels are planned according to teaching professional, Rene Toscano.
After school tennis classes for youth players begin weekday afternoons. Morning and evening tennis clinics for adults will also be offered.
In addition to several beginner classes, Rene will offer advanced classes for teen athletes who wish to train for the upcoming high school tennis season.

LTB wine tasting
ALPINE — Lions, Tigers and Bears will host its Sunset Wine Tasting event on Saturday, Aug. 22. Come raise a glass and spend a relaxing summer night with the Big Cats.
The event will be held at the ranch from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person (must be over 21), and must be purchased in advance.

Concert in the park

Chili cook-off in October
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is presenting its 8th Annual Chili Cook off Festival and 2 Annual Show and Shine Car Show on Oct. 3.
The Event will be held at The Alpine Community Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The organizers of the Event are looking for Chili Cookers and applications are being accepted now as there is limited space. The application deadline is Sept. 1.

Back to school time
CAMPO — Mountain Heath & Community Services is asking for your help to provide school supplies to the students of rural Mountain Empire schools.
Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. at the Mountain Empire Community Center.

School supplies needed include: 24 ct. crayons, Colored pencils, Glue bottles, Washable markers, Glue sticks, College ruled paper, Paper notebooks, 3-ring binders, Highlighter markers, Rulers, Scissors, Watercolor paints, Computer paper, Lined Index cards, Dictionaries, LOTS of backpacks (for all ages).

Community job fair
EL CAJON — On Wednesday, Sept. 2, Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-52) will be partnering with the East County Career Center and the Employment Development Department to host a community job fair at the Ronald Reagan Community Center in El Cajon. The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon, and open to all interested individuals and qualified companies.

Cardiovascular health day
ALPINE — Bethel Assembly of God will be hosting a Cardiovascular Health Day for Alpine residents on Sept. 8.
The tests are administered for a minimal cost by Life Line Screening. The health tests include three ultrasounds of the arteries, an EKG of the heart, and blood work up for cholesterol, glucose and liver damage.
Appointments for the health day tests are necessary and can be made by calling (800) 679-5192.
