Historical Society closed
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Museum will be closed in December. The museum will reopen on the last Saturday and Sunday in January from 2 to 4 p.m.

Book study group
ALPINE — A Course in Miracles: Book Study Group will be held every Friday (starting 1/1/10), 11 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., at the Alpine Mobile Home Estates Club House, 2400 Alpine Blvd.

Powerlink town hall meeting
ALPINE — Second District Supervisor Dianne Jacob will host a community town hall meeting on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center, to discuss the proposed Sunrise Powerlink and the undergrounding project that will take place along Alpine Boulevard.
Alpine residents and business owners are encouraged to attend to ask questions, raise concerns and discuss plans regarding the project and its effect on the local community.

Tree town meeting
ALPINE — This year the tree people will be working with some of the local elementary schools to set up tree programs in the class rooms. They are also gearing up for their 2nd Annual Tree Town event, which will take place at the Alpine Woman’s Club on Saturday, April 24.
If you love trees and are interested in learning more about how you can get involved then plan to attend their next meeting on Wednesday, Jan 20 at the Alpine Chamber office, 2707 Alpine Blvd at 5:30 p.m.

Thrifty Threads
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center’s Thrifty Threads resale shop is moving into the front half of the Old Firehouse on Alpine Boulevard.
This will provide lots of space for larger items and they can now accept large furniture and working appliances, but no mattresses please.
End of the tax year is around the corner, clean your closets and get your donations in now. All donations to Thrifty Threads are tax deductible.
Due to the increased size of the shop, they are also looking for a few volunteers to help run the store.
Proceeds from Thrifty Threads goes to fund new programs at the community center. For information call 445-7330.

Scholarships available
ALPINE — The California Federation of Republican Women, Southern Division, Charlotte Mousel Scholarship is awarded to assist graduating high school seniors who demonstrate their ability to think constructively on matters affecting our government.
Awards in the amount of $1,200 (first place) and $800 (second place) will be based on the following: Scholastic achievement, school activities, community involvement, political activities, general appearance of the application, and construction thought demonstrated in an essay.
A typewritten essay, not to exceed 1,000 words, with your thoughts on the topic: “Why is the U.S. Constitution unique in human history, and why should each U.S. citizen value its contents?” should be submitted together with the appropriate forms to: Marilyn Kruso, President, Mt. Weight loss challenge
ALPINE — A group of wellness professionals will hold a 12-week community weight loss challenge beginning Jan. 4 and 7.
Cost is $39 and includes a personal Coach, free body analysis, group support and more. All registration money will be paid out in cash prizes to the top Three “Losers.” Classes are held once each week and last about 45 minutes. Participants will learn about the power of protein, the importance of water, healthy snack choices, a balanced diet and fitness.

Winter tennis
ALPINE — It’s not too late to make your New Years’ Resolution of keeping physically fit. The ACC has the answer – learn to play tennis and burn those holiday calories.
Rene’ Toscano – Teaching Pro at the ACC will be accepting students for the winter season starting Jan. 7. A wide variety of programs will be offered for youth beginners to adults with previous playing experience.
Special classes for high school student athletes is offered with emphasis on game strategies and overall skill improvement according to coach Rene Toscano.

Free community chipping
ALPINE — The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council is hosting free community chipping events on Friday, Jan. 8 for North Central Alpine (Zone 2) and Friday, Jan. 22 for Central Alpine (Zone 3). Must register at least 7 days prior—need not be present.
Restrictions Apply: First come, first served. Limb diameter restricted to 8 inches. No mud, rocks, construction debris, or trash. No fibrous material (palm fronds, bamboo, etc.) No material from businesses, contractors, or professional landscapers. Crews are unable to chip brush that has been mechanically removed from the ground by tractors/heavy machinery.
Stack material with cut ends facing the street. You are responsible for hauling material to street. Multiple piles are permitted. Contractors used by GAFSC comply with daily work restrictions of the San Diego County Project Activity Level System.

Cox heroes scholarships
SAN DIEGO — Cox Heroes scholarships, in denominations of $2,500 or $10,000, are available for San Diego County adults, military dependents and high school seniors who dream of furthering their education.
To be considered for a Cox Heroes scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria and file their completed, postmarked application by Friday, Jan. 29: Live within a Cox Communications service area in San Diego County, demonstrate financial need, have a strong commitment to civic participation as demonstrated by involvement in community, church or school activities, be enrolled as a full-time college-student as of fall 2010 at an accredited two-year college, four-year university or licensed trade/vocational school located in San Diego County, High school seniors must be a June 2010 graduate from a San Diego County high school and have a minimum unweighted 3.0 GPA or higher, adults re-entering school must be age 25 or older and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.

RCD workshop
DESCANSO — The Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County is hosting a free tree planting and maintenance workshop on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. at the Descanso Town Hall, 24536 Viejas Grade Road.
Topics include: why to plant; where to get trees; where to plant; selecting your trees; how to plant; proper maintenance; seed to seedling process, and oak regeneration. Workshop instructors are Danielle Campbell, RCD Forester and David Janssen, Calfire Forester.
