Volunteers needed
PINE VALLEY — Horse of the Sun Equestrian Facility, 12 minutes east of Alpine, is in need of immediate volunteers to help with their Horses Heal Hearts and Team Esteem Programs. Assistance is needed with horse care and support, working with children in specialized equine character and esteem education programs.

Little League sponsors
MTN. EMPIRE — Mountain Empire Little League (MELL) is a non-profit Little League Baseball organization that provides an exciting youth baseball experience for players 4 to 15 years of age. To continue to provide a fun and encouraging environment for our youth, MELL requires a tremendous amount of support from our local community.
MELL is currently seeking financial sponsors. There are various Sponsor Plan Options to provide financial support, along with the benefits that come with that support. Dedicated community sponsors is vital to the success of the league by generating the income needed to continue field improvements, purchase uniforms/equipment, registration grants for need-based families and educational training clinics for coaches, managers, umpires, and players.
The Spring 2009 season officially begins in February and continues through June, with post-season tournaments continuing through August.

ALFA Bookstore
ALPINE —Don’t forget your Valentine on the 14th. We have great gift books. All non-fiction books will be 1/2 price from Wednesday, Feb. 18 through Sunday, Feb. 22. You will certainly find many to fire your interest and imagination at the ALFA Bookstore at 2554 Alpine Blvd.
Store hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wed. through Sunday. The volunteers at the bookstore want to thank all of you that have supported us this year.

Kiwanis community service
ALPINE — Kiwanis International has been serving the world for over 93 years. Our Alpine Kiwanis Club has been serving the Community of Alpine for 58 years.
We have sponsored our Local Boy Scout Troop 100 for over 50 years plus sponsoring over 40 Community Service Project’s yearly.
With 131 members, the Alpine Kiwanis Club, is the 3rd largest Club in the California/Hawaii/Nevada District of Kiwanis International.
Get on the Band Wagon of Community Service by joining the Alpine Kiwanis Club. The more members we have, the better service we can provide our Community. We meet every Saturday at 7 a.m. at the Alpine Elementary School.

Alpine pageantry
ALPINE — Alpine’s pageants are coming up for girls of all ages.
The Little Miss and Junior Miss Alpine Pageant, for girls ages 6 to 12 years old, will be held on March 14 at 6 p.m. at Alpine Elementary School. Please register by Feb. 10.
The 41st Miss and Teen Alpine Pageant, for ladies ages 13 to 21 years old, will be held on Monday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Viejas Casino. An orientation night will be held March 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

Valentine Celebration
ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis and the Alpine Community Center will host a Valentines Day Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.
Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. and Prime Rib or Chicken dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by The Ideals. Cost is $35 per person.

Canyonfolk concerts
ALPINE — Canyonfolks House concerts will host its first concert of the season on Saturday, Feb. 14. It's Valentines Day and all music lovers will loose their hearts to San Diego's own Nathan Welden.
There is a suggested donation of $15. There will be a dinner/dessert potluck buffet, so please bring a dish. The hosts will provide bottled water, coffee and tea.

Tree Town USA
ALPINE — Alpine has a new organization called Alpine Tree Town USA. This group is dedicated to the continued greening of Alpine using native trees and wants your help.
The first event sponsored by Alpine Tree Town USA will be an Arbor Day celebration on April 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., held at the Alpine Women's Club. There will be children's programs, speakers, vendors and information on greening the environment. If there are any vendors of natural arts and crafts, green technology and /or materials, native trees or environmental materials, please contact Gretchen Calabrese at 445-0577 for possible inclusion in the event. Alpine Evening Aglow
ALPINE — On Friday, Feb. 20, Dewayne Williams, counselor and teacher with "His Dwelling Place" will be the Aglow speaker. Dewayne's strengths and passion are to minister one-on-one to couples and individuals to overcome fears and obstacles in their lives. Spring tennis class
ALPINE — Get ready to “Spring into Tennis” starting March 9, at the Alpine Community Center. (ACC) Tennis classes for all age groups and player ability levels will again be featured according to Teaching Pro, Rene’ Toscano.
There will be afternoon classes for youth players, as well as morning and evening classes for adults. Group lessons are very popular so early registration is encouraged.
Rene Toscano will offer special classes for aspiring high school athletes interested in competing in the Grossmont High School tennis leagues.

Vendors and crafters sought
ALPINE — Vendors are invited to submit an application to sell their wares at the upcoming Sage & Songbirds Festival, set for May 2-3 in Alpine. The cutoff for application is March 15.
The 12th annual event, which takes place at the main entrance at Viejas Outlet Center, attracts thousands of visitors.
Vendor space is limited.
The two-day event, which features the release of live butterflies, attracts visitors from throughout southern California and other areas.
A tour of private home gardens is also held in conjunction with the Festival.

Frontiersman class
EL CAJON — Gage Skinner, long- time Pine Valley resident, mountain man re-enactor, and lecturer for the Grossmont Coyamaca College district, will be presenting a two hour class on the American Frontiersmen (1825-1840), as they pursued wild honey and “ bee trees” in the Western wilderness.
Skinner’s talk is based on his recently published research in the Rocky Mountain for trade, journal, museum of the mountain man, pinedale, Wyoming. Skinner has previously given talks to the Alpine Historical Society, and in 2008 donated vintage beekeeping items for display in our local museum. The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could use toothbrushes, men's and woman's white socks and hairbrushes, and under garments. Ronald McDonald House, next to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital is always in need of these donations. Rady’s is also collecting pull-tabs from soda and beer cans, to be recycled for money.

Alpine resident and Kiwanian, Dick Rabell began an effort last year, collecting and donating these items to Ronald McDonald House and they are very happy with Alpine’s collection efforts. Items can be bagged and dropped off at The Alpine Sun office.
Got an old car you want to get rid of? It must have an engine, although doesn’t need to be in running order. Contact Dick Rabell at 445-5712 to make arrangements to have your vehicle picked up and donated. Will be auctioned off and you will be notified.

Descanso Garden Club
DESCANSO — During last February and early March, the Descanso Garden Club invited you to enjoy its displays of blooming daffodils.
The Descanso Garden Club meets the second Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. Many of our meetings feature guest speakers and visitors are always welcome.

Father-Daughter Sweetheart Dance
ALPINE — The Father-Daughter Sweetheart Dance (or special uncle, brother, grandfather or friend) will be held on Friday, Feb. 13, at the Alpine Community Center from 6 to 8 p.m.
There will be a live DJ, dancing, games, refreshment, raffles, and a gift for each special girl. Come early and have a Free Portrait taken with your sweetheart! Only $30 for both Father & Daughter, additional guests (daughters) ages 6-13 years old $10.00 each.
This event is a sell-out each year — please respond ASAP — limited to first 125 couples! Reservations are needed. Tickets available at the Alpine Community Center 1830 Alpine Blvd., or call 390-0061.

Kiwanis honors local law enforcement
ALPINE — On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Kiwanis Club of Alpine will law enforcement officers for their service to our local community. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, and United States Border Patrol will be recognized.
The Alpine Kiwanis Law Enforcement Appreciation Day recognizes the above departments choices as law enforcement Deputy, Officer and Agent of year. Each recipient will receive a resolution from the California State Assembly.
The Alpine Kiwanis breakfast meeting will be held at the Alpine Elementary School, 1850 Alpine Blvd., starting at 7 a.m. This meeting will be open to guests who want to be present to honor our local law enforcement officers.

Radio meet and greet
ALPINE — KRLY FM will be hosting a gala re-introduction of the radio station in Alpine on Saturday, Feb. 14, Valentines Day, with an on-the-air broadcast from 10 a.m. — 2 p.m. from the Albertsons parking lot in Alpine.
Rain or shine, the station will be providing pop-up tents and propane heaters to make the event comfortable and fun. 100’s of prizes are going to be given away to those present to celebrate our new sound, news, weather, traffic, entertainment and sports reporting.
Prizes include flowers and candy for the ladies, face painting and clowns for the kids, tee shirts, balloons and games for everyone. Special guests will be dropping by the broadcast and the Country Music Association truck, autographed by over 100 of the top country music stars will be on display.
Beauty Queens, cheerleaders and ambassadors will join “MY 107.9 FM in the celebration. Aside from broadcasting the event, the station will be streaming on the web at www.my1079.com
The Alpine Kiwanis Club will be there with their world famous cook shack so no one will go hungry.
MY 107.9 FM invites everyone in East County to come and join their re-birth as East County’s Radio Station.

Community Fair
ALPINE — Albertsons and the Alpine and Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce will host the second annual community fair on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot.
This free event will feature many local businesses, a NASCAR video simulator, bike rodeo and carshow. There will also be hot dogs and drinks on sale for $1.

Spacefest
SAN DIEGO — Spacefest, which attracts astronomy enthusiasts worldwide, is being held in San Diego this year at the Town and Country resort, from Feb. 19-22. It will be the largest gathering of pioneer astronauts in the area, as well as some of the most compelling, charismatic and expert astronomy speakers on the planet.
2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing by Apollo 11 in 1969. 2009 is also the International Year of Astronomy. Two of the Apollo 11 crew will attend, Dr. Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Over two-dozen other space luminaries will also speak.
Admission is $35 daily/$75 all weekend (in advance), or $50 daily/$95 all weekend at the door. Active military cheerfully admitted for only $10 for the weekend. See the website www.spacefest.info for a complete list of guests and activities.

Writers’ workshop
PINE VALLEY — Mountain Empire Creative Arts Council (MECAC) offers East County residents an unprecedented opportunity to “brush up” writing skills and “brush shoulders” with one of San Diego’s most gifted teachers and practitioners of the art of writing — Dr. Dean Nelson, renowned founder and director of the Department of Journalism at Point Loma Nazarene University.
The MECAC Writers’ Workshop will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pine Valley Conference Center.
The all-day workshop is for both experienced writers and those interested in learning more about writing. We will have an opportunity to develop our “voice” and to better articulate our particular passions.

Sidewalk sale
ALPINE — Longs Drugs, in partnership with Alpine and Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce, will host a community sidewalk sale on Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Alpine Creek Town Center, 1385 Tavern Road.

Scholarship contest
ALPINE — The Alpine Fire Protection District invites local high school seniors to compete for one of five $1,000 regional scholarships to be awarded by the San Diego Chapter of the California Special Districts Association (CSDA). A minimum of five scholarships will be awarded and some students may receive multiple scholarships and additional awards such as gas cards.
The purpose of the scholarship program is to increase knowledge and awareness of special districts and their role in local government.
Students who compete for a scholarship will complete an essay that demonstrates their knowledge about the purpose of special districts. Applicants must also provide a personal statement related to their background or goals. Additional selection criteria includes community involvement or volunteer service, letters of recommendation, and grade point average.
Students may print out an application on the District’s website www.alpinefire.org or contact Chief Paskle at 445-2635. Applications must be received at the District’s office by 5 p.m. Friday, March 13. Eligible students must live within the District’s service area.

Women’s shooting day
ALPINE — The National Association’s Women on Target program, the NRA Members Council of Greater San Diego, and Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club are sponsoring a Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun Shooting Clinic in Alpine. The goal is to introduce women to shooting sports and provide them with the opportunity to meet other women interested in learning how to safely and effectively use a firearm. All women are welcome to these outings.
The clinic will be held at the Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club, 16232 Sequan Truck Trail, Alpine, CA on April 5, July 12, and Oct. 11 from 1—5 p.m. The total cost of this clinic is $25, all necessary equipment will be included.
