Tuesday in the park
ALPINE —Viejas Outlet Center is proud to announce “Tuesdays in the Park” featuring the 2009 Movies in the Park Season with free, family-friendly movies, and Market in the Park, Alpine’s first farmers market.
Every Tuesday through Aug. 11, the center will feature free Movies in the Park. Movies will begin at sundown each week.
Also on Tuesdays, Viejas is proud to bring the first farmers market to Alpine, Market in the Park. Every Tuesday, the Market in the Park will feature fresh produce, plants and specialty items from local vendors from 3:30-7:30 p.m.
Movie schedule is as follows: July 28 – Surf’s Up, Aug. 4 – The Ant Bully, Aug. 11 – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
The Farmers Market and movies are free and open to the public. Blankets are allowed, but no alcohol or pets permitted.

Pine Valley Days
PINE VALLEY — The 39th Annual Pine Valley Day is just around the corner, so make sure you mark your calendars for July 25.
Be sure to start off the day with breakfast burritos at the Pine Valley Clubhouse from 7 to 9 a.m. The parade begins at 9 a.m. and makes its way along Historic Old Highway 80.
Following the parade, mosey-on-down to the Pine Valley County Park. Here you will find craft vendors, food, and fun. We’ve also rounded-up two of San Diego County’s hottest bands, Southbound Jonny and The HonkyTonk Kings. And what would Pine Valley Day be without the famous deep pit barbecue dinner cooked to perfection and served to you by the Mountain Empire Men’s Club?

VFW Luau
ALPINE — The Alpine VFW’s Ladies Auxiliary is hosting its annual Hawaiian Luau on Saturday, July 25, at 1 p.m. at the post 844 Tavern Road, Alpine.
Proceeds from the event to benefit the many Auxiliary Projects for Veterans, their families and the community. Music will be presented by Ricky Z.
Tickets by donation are $10, available in the canteen, tickets at the door $12.

Historical society luncheon
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society invites the community to their Pot Luck Luncheon and to hear award winning local journalist Jack Innis. Bring whatever dish you like.
The luncheon will be held at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd on Sunday, Aug. 16. Lunch starts at 1 p.m. and speaker begins at 2 p.m. This is a great time to meet new and interesting people and to hear all about Mr. Innis’s book, San Diego Legends.”
Jack Innis has made an extensive study of the wonderful and often-times quirky history of San Diego. His book brings together for the first time the extraordinary accounts of famous and infamous people, places, and events in San Diego’s past. He has the stories behind the news stories. Innis is a long-time surfer, fisherman, and boating enthusiast, he is the local media relations representative of the International Game Fish Association and formerly editor of the San Diego Log.

Western Luau
DESCANSO — Chapel of the Hills will host its annual Western Luau, deep pit barbecue dinner and Hawaiian-style pork on Sunday, Aug. 2 from 12:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the church, 25153 Viejas Blvd.
The event will include door prizes, a chance to win a free trip to Hawaii and entertainment including live island dancers and singers.
Cost is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children 12 and under, drink and dessert included. Family tickets are $25 (includes two adults and children).

Anniversary weekend celebration
CAMPO — Golden Acorn Casino is planning a fabulous 8th anniversary weekend celebration at the Casino on Aug. 14-16.
Beginning Friday, Aug. 14, at noon and lasting until 7 p.m., they will be holding another Fair – Farmer’s Market on the north parking lot. The Fair will last three days, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and the charge will be $35 for all three days. Kiddie Carnival rides will be offered at the same location. Also on the 14, there will be Comedy Night in the Casino, beginning at 8 p.m., featuring several new and exciting comedy acts.
Saturday, Aug. 15, the Fair – Farmer’s Market will continue, beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting until 7 p.m. with fireworks beginning at 9 p.m. There will also be bands playing in the Casino. Carnival rides continue.
Sunday, Aug. 16 will feature another band in the Casino and the last day of the Fair-Farmer’s Market and the carnival rides. If you wish to become a vendor at the Fair, please call Diana Shea at 938-6018 and request a packet.

32nd annual Descanso blood drive
DESCANSO — The 32nd annual Descanso Blood Drive will be held Sunday, Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Descanso Town Hall, 24536 Viejas Grade Road.

Alpine Garden Club pot luck
ALPINE — After a three-year hiatus the Alpine Garden Club will hold its first meeting on Saturday. Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. at the home of Peter Swoboda, 840 Midway Drive, Alpine. It will be a Pot Luck luncheon and anyone interested in meeting people who love to garden, as well as learning about local flowers, plants and trees are welcome to attend.
The Alpine Garden Cub was started on July 8, 1994 and at one time had over 35 members. Due to illness and the passing of several members it disbanded. However, Peter Swoboda would like to re-start this casual and informative group.
This club has no president, no secretary and no treasurer. There are no minutes and no fund raising activities. It is just a group of gardening enthusiasts who get together once a month to share clippings, seeds and information about local horticulture.
