Descanso area target of USFS grant to Greater San Diego RCD  
During the May 29 open house and grand opening of the new Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego building, resource conservation district and other officials noted that a $3 million U.S. Forest Service grant to the RCD would focus on removing dead, dying, and diseased oak trees in the Descanso area.
  
Volunteers recognized for their FSC efforts  
Community Fire Safe Councils and the volunteers that run them were honored last week, for exceptional service to their communities in the area of wildfire prevention in San Diego County. A special Awards Ceremony was held at Barona Resort and Casino.
 

3rd annual luau raises money for AUSD
Despite ominous grey skies and a cool breeze, dozens of residents and businesspeople gathered at Alpine’s Historic Campbell Creek Ranch last Saturday, June 20, to take part in the 3rd annual Luau at the Ranch. The event, hosted by the Alpine Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, benefits students and schools in the Alpine Union School District.

African Safari treks at ACC
Hey Kids, how would like to go on an African Safari and see all kinds of wild animals in their native habitat? All Alpine boys and girls from 5 through 12 years old are invited. The Safari leaves Alpine on Sunday, June 28 at 6 p.m. for an adventure of a life-time and returns on July 2. 
 
Carrying the torch for gay rights in East County  
Two-dozen torchbearers led a relay for gay rights through East County on Saturday June 6, including rallies at city halls in El Cajon, Santee, La Mesa and Lemon Grove.

Guilty pleas in Viejas casino and other cases
An escaped inmate from county jail who tried to cash a stolen check while gambling at the Viejas Casino in Alpine has pleaded guilty to receiving stolen property.
