Volunteers needed
PINE VALLEY — Horse of the Sun Equestrian Facility, 12 minutes east of Alpine, is in need of immediate volunteers to help with their Horses Heal Hearts and Team Esteem Programs. Assistance is needed with horse care and support, working with children in specialized equine character and esteem education programs.

Tree Town USA
ALPINE — Alpine has a new organization called Alpine Tree Town USA. This group is dedicated to the continued greening of Alpine using native trees and wants your help.
The first event sponsored by Alpine Tree Town USA will be an Arbor Day celebration on April 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., held at the Alpine Women’s Club. There will be children’s programs, speakers, vendors and information on greening the environment. If there are any vendors of natural arts and crafts, green technology and /or materials, native trees or environmental materials, please contact Gretchen Calabrese at 445-0577 for possible inclusion in the event. Anyone interested in becoming a speaker at the event should contact Carlette Anderson at carletteanderson@aol.com.

Family planting
and green tour
BOULEVARD — Sacred Rocks Reserve will host a “Family Planting Event & Green Tour,” on Saturday, March 21.
Planting activities and green tours begin Saturday, March 21, for day visitors. Materials provided. Other activities included Friday, March 20 through Sunday, March 22 for overnight campers.
This event is open to the public, many family friendly activities available. RV, tent campers and day visitors are welcome. Planting Event and Green Tour are free! Saturday night, a community campfire and hotdog roast will be available at a cost of $5 per person. Please RSVP with the number of people in your group to sacredrocks@gmail.com or call 766-4480. Sacred Rocks Reserve and RV Park is located at 1331 Shasta Way, Boulevard.

Community Open Houses
SDG&E is hosting a series of open houses to provide local residents with more information. SDG&E representatives will be on hand to answer questions.
Remaining open houses will be held in Imperial Valley on Wednesday, March 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the El Centro Community Center, 375 S. First Street in El Centro; and in Jacumba on Wednesday, March 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jacumba Highland Senior Center, 44681 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba.

MHCS Open House
ALPINE — Mountain Health & Community Services (MHCS) is hosting an Open House on Tuesday, March 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the Alpine Facility, at 1620 Alpine Blvd.
This Open House will be introducing our new physician, Dr. April Soto, to the community. This is a great opportunity for our community partners and our East County residents to meet our staff and learn about the many services that we offer.

Scholarship contest
ALPINE — The Alpine Fire Protection District invites local high school seniors to compete for one of five $1,000 regional scholarships to be awarded by the San Diego Chapter of the California Special Districts Association (CSDA). A minimum of five scholarships will be awarded.
The purpose of the scholarship program is to increase knowledge and awareness of special districts and their role in local government.
Students who compete for a scholarship will complete an essay that demonstrates their knowledge about the purpose of special districts. Applicants must also provide a personal statement related to their background or goals. Additional selection criteria includes community involvement or volunteer service, letters of recommendation, and GPA.
Students may print out an application on the District’s website www.alpinefire.org or contact Chief Paskle at 445-2635. Applications must be received at the District’s office by 5 p.m. Friday, March 13. Eligible students must live within the District’s service area.

Republican Women’s meeting
ALPINE — The Mtn. Empire Republican Women Federated meeting will be held on Monday, March 16, at the Alpine Mobile Home Park, in the clubhouse, 2400 Alpine Blvd.
Coffee and light refreshments begin at 10:30 a.m. The program, entitled “Identity Theft” presented by a representative from the Alpine Sheriff’s Department will begin at 10:45 a.m.

Vendors and crafters sought
ALPINE — Vendors are invited to submit an application to sell their wares at the upcoming Sage & Songbirds Festival, set for May 2-3 in Alpine. The cutoff for application is March 15.
The 12th annual event, which takes place at the main entrance at Viejas Outlet Center, attracts thousands of visitors. Vendor space is limited.
The two-day event, which features the release of live butterflies, attracts visitors from throughout southern California and other areas.
A tour of private home gardens is also held in conjunction with the Festival.

HOPE kickoff meeting
HOPE of Mountain Empire will host its 2009 Kickoff meeting on Monday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the El Rancho Bar and Grill in Lake Morena.
The first item on the agenda is to go over our platform and add, subtract or modify as required. The group will be electing officers, so please be ready to step up and serve if you can. Finally, they will be forming a financial, nominating, and outreach committee to begin preparing for upcoming events.
H.O.P.E. is open to everyone.

Frontiersman class
EL CAJON — Gage Skinner, long- time Pine Valley resident, mountain man re-enactor, and lecturer for the Grossmont Cuyamaca College district, will be presenting a two hour class on the American Frontiersmen (1825-1840), as they pursued wild honey and “ bee trees” in the Western wilderness.
Skinner’s talk is based on his recently published research in the Rocky Mountain for trade, journal, museum of the mountain man, Pinedale, Wyoming. Skinner has previously given talks to the Alpine Historical Society, and in 2008 donated vintage beekeeping items for display in our local museum. The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25.

VFW Easter Egg Hunt
CAMPO — Campo VFW Post 2080 is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bicycle Rodeo for the kids in the community on Saturday, March 28.
The egg hunt — for all ages — will begin at noon and the Bicycle rodeo at 1 p.m. Trophy’s will be given, and a new bicycle given to one lucky boy and girl whose contestant ticket is drawn. Hot dogs/hamburgers, soft drinks and a bake sale will be available at an affordable price.
