Alpine Princess pageants 2009
     ALPINE — Interested in becoming Miss Alpine or Miss Alpine Teen 2009? The pageants have been a tradition in the community of Alpine for over 40 years. The program is sponsored by the Alpine Community Center and produced by Scholarship Productions USA, Inc.
     The Pageant will be held Monday, May 4, at Viejas Casino in the DreamCatcher Lounge. Tuesday, March 24 is the last day to qualify for this year’s scholarship pageants.
     All interested young ladies between the ages of 13 and 21 years old are invited to attend the rehearsal Tuesday, at the Alpine Community Center, the Modeling Workshop begins at 6:30 p.m. Interested contestants should arrive at 6 p.m., please bring a pair of pumps (heels) for the class.
     Contestants for the Miss Teen Alpine title must be at least 13 years of age and no older than 16 as of Jan. 1, 2009. The Miss Alpine Division participants must be at least 17 and no more than 21 years old as of Jan. 1, 2009.

Fiddler on the Roof
     ALPINE — The Alpine Union School District will be performing Fiddler on the Roof at the Alpine Women’s Club on Alpine Boulevard, on March 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 with a 7 p.m. curtain.
     Fiddler On The Roof is a musical drama that takes place in the Russian village of Anatevka in 1905.
     Tickets are on sale at Joan Mac Queen Middle School or from any cast member or at the door. Get your tickets early as the shows have been selling out. On Fridays and Saturdays there will be deli dinners for sale beginning at 6:15 p.m.
     Tickets range in price from $5 to $25 for the front row. All proceeds go back into the musical theater funds to cover expenses. The show will be Broadway quality in Alpine’s own backyard.

VFW Easter Egg Hunt
     CAMPO — Campo VFW Post 2080 is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bicycle Rodeo for the kids in the community on Saturday, March 28.
     The egg hunt — for all ages — will begin at noon and the Bicycle rodeo at 1 p.m. Trophy’s will be given, and a new bicycle given to one lucky boy and girl whose contestant ticket is drawn. Hot dogs/hamburgers, soft drinks and a bake sale will be available at an affordable price.

Hunter Safety Class
     DESCANSO — A Hunter Safety State Certified Class will be held on Saturday March 28 beginning at 9 a.m. in Descanso for those interested in obtaining a hunting license.
     The class cost is $10, which covers everything the state requires to obtain a hunting license also the certificate is good through all of the United States and Canada. The all-day class takes 10 hours.

Parking lot sale
     ALPINE — Christ the King Episcopal Church, located at 1460 Midway Drive, will host a one-day-only community parking lot sale on March 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
     The event will be rain or shine, and all proceeds also benefit Relay for Life Alpine in the fight against cancer. Spaces are limited and cost $10, call and reserve today: 723-0309 or visit www.ChristTheKingAlpine.org.

Read with a Queen
     DESCANSO — On Saturday, March 28, the Descanso branch library will host a preschool story time with Miss Mountain Empire princesses at 11 a.m.
     Miss Mountain Empire, Ashley Glover and her princesses will be here to lead Story Time along with a craft with the children.

Family planting and green tour
     BOULEVARD — Sacred Rocks Reserve will host a “Family Planting Event & Green Tour,” on Saturday, March 21.
     Planting activities and green tours begin Saturday, March 21, for day visitors. Materials provided. Other activities included Friday, March 20 through Sunday, March 22 for overnight campers.
     This event is open to the public, many family friendly activities available. RV, tent campers and day visitors are welcome. Planting Event and Green Tour are free! Saturday night, a community campfire and hotdog roast will be available at a cost of $5 per person.

Community open houses
     SDG&E is hosting a series of open houses to provide local residents with more information. SDG&E representatives will be on hand to answer questions.
     Remaining open houses will be held in Jacumba on Wednesday, March 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jacumba Highland Senior Center, 44681 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba.

MHCS open house
     ALPINE — Mountain Health & Community Services (MHCS) is hosting an Open House on Tuesday, March 24, at 5:30 p.m. at our Alpine Facility, located at 1620 Alpine Blvd.
     This Open House will be introducing our new physician, Dr. April Soto, to the community. This is a great opportunity for our community partners and our East County residents to meet our staff and learn about the many services that we offer.

Frontiersman class
     EL CAJON — Gage Skinner, long-time Pine Valley resident, mountain man re-enactor, and lecturer for the Grossmont Cuyamaca College district, will be presenting a two hour class on the American Frontiersmen.
     Skinner’s talk is based on his recently published research in the Rocky Mountain for trade, journal, museum of the mountain man, Pinedale, Wyoming. The lecture is scheduled for March 25.

Luke Barbour Scholarship
     DESCANSO — The Descanso Town Hall Association is please to announce the 15th Annual Luke Barbour Scholarship competition is now underway. There will be two winners who will each win $1,000 to be sent to the school of their choice in their name. The funds will be placed on account to be used for books, etc., as needed.
     The applications are available at Perkins Store and the Descanso Library. The counselor at Mountain Empire High School also has a supply. As in the past, there is an essay portion, due April 10, and an interview portion, which will be held April 26 at the Town Hall. Students must have a “B” average.

Library Scholarship
     DESCANSO—Descanso High School Seniors are invited to apply for a $1,000 Scholarship sponsored by the Friends of the Descanso Library. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating High School senior who resides in the Descanso zip code 91916.
     Please pick up an application and information beginning on March 17, at the Descanso Library located at 9545 River Drive, Descanso. Closing date for return of completed materials is April 18, 2009.
