Back Country no-cost chipping service
DESCANSO —To take advantage of a no-cost chipping Service for vegetation reduction, please call the Fire Safe Council 562-0096 to register. Due to limited funding, the chipping service can only be offered once per property with a maximum of one day per property.
Please be sure to tell the coordinator that you would like to have the chipper service, please provide your name, phone number and address. There is a 6-inch diameter limit on limbs to be chipped, piles of brush should be no more than 6 feet high, and please keep all materials free of mud, rocks, construction wood and other debris.
This service will be offered to the following areas: Boulevard, Campo/Lake Morena, Corte Madera, Deerhorn Valley, Descanso, Dehesa, Dulzura, Greater Julian, Jacumba, Jamul, and several more of our backcountry areas. Please call for more information. For information on chipping in the Alpine area, please call the Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council.

Books at Bargain Prices
DESCANSO—Like to buy used books at bargain prices? Come in and browse our selection of paperback and hardcover books. The Friends of the Descanso Library Book Sale is every Wednesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., located in the book room behind the Descanso Library. For more information call the library at 445-5279.
Jewelry making class: The Descanso Library will be presenting three jewelry-making classes by Mountain Beadworks in Julian. The first class will be on Saturdays at 10 a.m. The schedule is April 4, May 9 and July 18.

Fiddler on the Roof
ALPINE — The Alpine Union School District is currently performing Fiddler on the Roof at the Alpine Women’s Club on Alpine Boulevard, on March 26, 27 and 28 with a 7 p.m. curtain.
Fiddler On The Roof is a musical drama that takes place in the Russian village of Anatevka in 1905.
Tickets are on sale at Joan Mac Queen Middle School or from any cast member or at the door. Get your tickets early as the shows have been selling out. On Fridays and Saturdays there will be deli dinners for sale beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Tickets range in price from $5 to $25 for the front row. All proceeds go back into the musical theater funds to cover expenses. The show will be Broadway quality in Alpine’s own backyard.

ALFA bookstore deals
ALPINE —All Western literature (Zane Gray, Louie L’Amour and others) will be half-price from Wednesday, March 25 to April 1. Also ALFA’s monthly half-price weekend sale will take place on March 28 and 29.
We are inundated with donations presently and would like you to limit your donations to newer paperback and hard-back fiction and cookbooks for the present. Come visit the non-profit store at 2554 Alpine Blvd. Open Wednesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

protest meeting
ALPINE — The East County Community Action Coalition (ECCAC) will be holding an all-hands-on community meeting to protest SDG&E’s proposed Sunrise Powerlink, to be held on Monday, April 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
The event will have speakers, and exhibits, and specific calls to action that we can do as a community to stop the Sunrise Powerlink from bringing San Diego “renewable firestorms.”

Geo-caching
Easter egg hunt
BOULEVARD — Sacred Rocks Reserve’s Geo-Caching Easter Egg Treasure Hunt and “Hug a Tree” Wilderness Survival Course will be held Saturday, April 4. Geo-Caching Easter Egg Hunt will be held from 10 a.m. until noon. The “Hug a Tree” Wilderness Survival Course, taught by Search & Rescue Trainer Viki Mason, will be held from 2-4 p.m. on the same day.
This event is open to families of all ages — children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. RV, tent campers and day visitors are welcome. Easter Egg Hunt is $5 for the day. Participants must bring their own GPS Receiver or iPhone. “Hug a Tree” Survival Skills Course is $20 per person for the day.

VFW Easter Egg Hunt
CAMPO — Campo VFW Post 2080 is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bicycle Rodeo for the kids in the community on Saturday, March 28.
The egg hunt — for all ages — will begin at noon and the Bicycle rodeo at 1 p.m. Trophy’s will be given, and a new bicycle given to one lucky boy and girl whose contestant ticket is drawn. Hot dogs/hamburgers, soft drinks and a bake sale will be available at an affordable price.

Hunter Safety Class
DESCANSO — A Hunter Safety State Certified Class will be held on Saturday March 28 beginning at 9 a.m. in Descanso for those interested in obtaining a hunting license.
The class cost is $10, which covers everything the state requires to obtain a hunting license also the certificate is good through all of the United States and Canada. The all-day class takes 10 hours.

Parking lot sale
ALPINE — Christ the King Episcopal Church, located at 1460 Midway Drive, will host a one-day-only community parking lot sale on Saturday, March 28 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Historical Society open
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Museum will be open to the public on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. This is a great opportunity to tour two historic homes with knowledgeable docents.
Both houses are owned by the Alpine Historical Society. They are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House built in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house built in 1899. They are both located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

ALPINE — CHIRP Garden Club will host a special guest speaker from the Los Angeles area at 6:30 p.m., April 1 in the Crown Hills Clubhouse, 1821 Victoria Park Terrace in Alpine.
Organic gardening educator Gisele Schoniger, aka “G,” is coming back to Alpine by popular demand and will talk about how to get the most out of your garden, organically. Gisele will share her wealth of gardening wisdom in her uniquely upbeat and entertaining style.

Luke Barbour Scholarship
DESCANSO — The Descanso Town Hall Association is please to announce the 15th Annual Luke Barbour Scholarship competition is now underway. There will be two winners who will each win $1,000 to be sent to the school of their choice in their name. The funds will be placed on account to be used for books, etc., as needed.
The applications are available at Perkins Store and the Descanso Library. The counselor at MEHS also has a supply. As in the past, there is an essay portion, due April 10, and an interview portion, which will be held April 26 at the Town Hall. Students must have maintained a “B” average.

Library Scholarship
DESCANSO—Descanso High School Seniors are invited to apply for a $1,000
Scholarship sponsored by the Friends of the Descanso Library. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating High School senior who resides in the Descanso zip code 91916.
Please pick up an application and information beginning on March 17, at the Descanso Library located at 9545 River Drive, Descanso. Closing date for return of completed materials is April 18, 2009
