Country craft show
ALPINE — Alpine Country Gifts and Crafts will be presenting its 15th “Home Town Event,” beginning on Thursday, March 5 from 4 to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, March 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday March 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Historic Alpine’s Women’s Club at 2156 Alpine Blvd.
More than 30 juried crafters with unbelievable top quality crafts will be stocking daily.

VFW Rib Night
CAMPO — Campo VFW Post 2080 is resuming its famous Rib Dinners on Friday, March 6 at the post, 301 Sheridan Road in Campo.
Cost is still $8 for a delicious meal. Dessert is just one dollar more. Their Steak Fry is also back on the third Saturday of each month. Cost $12 includes all the trimmings. A great deal and a great meal.
Saturday, March 28 the VFW is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bicycle Rodeo for the kids in the community. The egg hunt — for all ages — will begin at noon and the Bicycle rodeo at 1 p.m. Trophy’s will be given, and a new bicycle given to one lucky boy and girl whose contestant ticket is drawn. Hot dogs/hamburgers, soft drinks and a bake sale will be available at an affordable price.

Pony league fundraising game
ALPINE — As Alpine Viejas Pony League will kick off its season with a “Player versus Parent” game as well as a fundraiser, held this Saturday, March 7, beginning at 11 am.
The game will be broadcasted live by FM 107.9 with Marc Bailey of Channel 8 and Chuck Taylor doing the live broadcast. Alpine’s Honorary Mayor Bob Ring and Charlie Brown of Viejas will throw out the First Pitch and Chamber of Commerce members will also be in attendance.
Albertson’s in Alpine is donating all of the food and drinks.

Descanso Garden Club
DESCANSO — During last February and early March, the Descanso Garden Club invited you to enjoy its displays of blooming daffodils.
The Descanso Garden Club meets the second Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. Many of our meetings feature guest speakers and visitors are always welcome.

Spring tennis class
ALPINE — Get ready to “Spring into Tennis” starting March 9, at the Alpine Community Center. (ACC) Tennis classes for all age groups and player ability levels will again be featured according to Teaching Pro, Rene’ Toscano.
There will be afternoon classes for youth players, as well as morning and evening classes for adults. Group lessons are very popular so early registration is encouraged.
Rene Toscano will offer special classes for aspiring high school athletes interested in competing in the Grossmont High School tennis leagues.

Community Powerlink open houses
ALPINE — SDG&E is hosting a series of open houses to provide local residents with more information. SDG&E representatives will be on hand to answer questions.
Remaining open houses will be held in Alpine on Tuesday, March 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Boulevard; in Imperial Valley on Wednesday, March 18 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the El Centro Community Center, 375 S. First Street in El Centro; and in Jacumba on Wednesday, March 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Jacumba Highland Senior Center, 44681 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba.

Scholarship contest
ALPINE — The Alpine Fire Protection District invites local high school seniors to compete for one of five $1,000 regional scholarships to be awarded by the San Diego Chapter of the California Special Districts Association (CSDA). The purpose of the scholarship program is to increase knowledge and awareness of special districts and their role in local government.
Students who compete for a scholarship will complete an essay that demonstrates their knowledge about the purpose of special districts. Applicants must also provide a personal statement related to their background or goals. Students may print out an application on the District’s website www.alpinefire.org or contact Chief Paskle at 445-2635. Applications must be received at the District’s office by 5 p.m. Friday, March 13. Eligible students must live within the District’s service area.

Volunteers needed
PINE VALLEY — Horse of the Sun Equestrian Facility, 12 minutes east of Alpine, is in need of immediate volunteers to help with their Horses Heal Hearts and Team Esteem Programs. Assistance is needed with horse care and support, working with children in specialized equine character and esteem education programs.

Farmer’s market and street fair
CAMPO —Acorn Casino and Travel Center, located on I-8 and the Crestwood Exit in Campo, is planning for a future Farmer’s Market and Street Fair. And, the Casino is looking for growers and vendors for this event. We want to have food, frolic and friendship at the Farmer’s Market and give our good neighbors a chance to sell their wares. All vendors will be welcome. But, we need your input to help us get started and are asking you to call us with your good advice.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could use toothbrushes, men’s and woman’s white socks, hairbrushes, and under garments. Ronald McDonald House, next to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital is always in need of these donations. Rady’s is also collecting pull-tabs from soda and beer cans, to be recycled for money.

Got an old car you want to get rid of? It must have an engine, although doesn’t need to be in running order. Contact Dick Rabell at 445-5712 to make arrangements to have your vehicle picked up and donated. Will be auctioned off and you will be notified.

Kiwanis community service
ALPINE — Kiwanis International has been serving the world for over 93 years. Our Alpine Kiwanis Club has been serving the Community of Alpine for 58 years.
With 131 members, the Alpine Kiwanis Club, is the 3rd largest Club in the California/ Hawaii/ Nevada District of Kiwanis International.
Get on the Band Wagon of Community Service by joining the Alpine Kiwanis Club. We meet every Saturday at 7 a.m. at the Alpine Elementary School.

Tree Town USA
ALPINE — Alpine has a new organization called Alpine Tree Town USA. This group is dedicated to the continued greening of Alpine using native trees and wants your help.
The first event sponsored by Alpine Tree Town USA will be an Arbor Day celebration on April 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., held at the Alpine Women’s Club. There will be children’s programs, speakers, vendors and information on greening the environment. If there are any vendors of natural arts and crafts, green technology and /or materials, native trees or environmental materials, please contact Gretchen Calabrese at 445-0577 for possible inclusion in the event. Sidewalk sale
ALPINE — Longs Drugs, in partnership with Alpine and Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce, will host a community sidewalk sale on Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Alpine Creek Town Center, 1385 Tavern Road.

St. Patrick’s Day celebration
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center will host its annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration on Wednesday, March 11, from 4 to 6:00 p.m.
Dinner will include traditional grub and Irish Ales with a corned beef and cabbage supper. Tickets are $12 for Adults and $5 for Kids.

Vendors and crafters sought
ALPINE — Vendors are invited to submit an application to sell their wares at the upcoming Sage & Songbirds Festival, set for May 2-3 in Alpine. The cutoff for application is March 15.
The 12th annual event, which takes place at the main entrance at Viejas Outlet Center, attracts thousands of visitors.
Vendor space is limited. The two-day event, which features the release of live butterflies, attracts visitors from throughout southern California and other areas.
A tour of private home gardens is also held in conjunction with the Festival.
