President Obama to get Alpine
school essay contest letters
ALPINE — President
Barack Obama will be hearing from young Alpine school students
soon. Alpine Union School District students who wrote
outstanding essay letters for the president will be recognized
on May 20 at the 7th Annual Essay Contest Winners Dinner in
Alpine.
Every winner, from wee kindergartners to teen-aged
eighth-graders, will read their essays to an appreciative
audience during the special evening at the Alpine Community
Center.
The benefit fund raiser to provide classroom equipment
and programs for Alpine schools is presented by the Education
Committee of the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce.
“The (essay) theme this year is ‘A Letter to President
Obama,’” said school district Supt. Greg Ryan. “It was just an
open-ended letter. I’ve seen a couple of them and they’re really
nice. I think it will be fun.”
And, Ryan said, the letters will be sent to the
President.
The essay contest dinner is open to the general public.
It starts at 6 p.m. at the community center at 1830 Alpine Blvd.
Reservations are $25 each for adults, $10 each for
children under 15, and $200 for tables of eight.
Proceeds from the dinner, which are tax deductible, are
donated through the nonprofit Alpine Chamber Community
Foundation to buy educational needs that aren’t covered under
school budgets.
During the past six years the partnership effort by the
schools, the Chamber and its members, the Foundation and the
community has raised more than $60,000 to help local students.
The charming evening with its emphasis on education has
become a popular annual event in this scenic foothills
community. Family, friends, school staff and community
supporters applaud each winning essay, and generous businesses
donate gifts for the winners.
Ryan noted that the event is “a great help” to the
Alpine schools — Creekside Early Learning Center; Alpine, Shadow
Hills and Boulder Oaks elementary schools, and Joan MacQueen
Middle School.
To make reservations or to get more information, call
the Chamber at 445-2722 or visit the Chamber office at 2707
Alpine Blvd.
