Mtn. Empire Republican Women
ALPINE — At the next Mtn. Empire Republican Women meeting will feature a representative from the Alpine Fire Department, who will talk about Fire Safety.
The luncheon meeting will be held Monday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at Donato’s Restaurant, 2654 Alpine Blvd, Alpine.

Essay Contest Dinner
ALPINE — The Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce will host the 7th Annual Essay Contest Winners Dinner, presented by the Education Committee, on Wednesday, May 20 at the Alpine Community Center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.
Alpine students, kindergarten through eighth grade, who wrote the best “Letter to President Obama” essays will be honored. The annual fundraiser to provide classroom programs and equipment not covered by Alpine school budgets is open to the public.

Albertson’s Rummage Sale
ALPINE — A community rummage sale and car wash will be held on Saturday May 23 at 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Albertson’s parking lot.
Get two spaces for $10: One to park and the other to display your items. There is limited space so please see Customer Service to reserve your spot.
There are three ways to participate, 1) drop off small items at the Relay for Life area before 8 a.m., 2) Reserve a space and keep all the money you raise, 3) Reserve a space on the Relay for Life side and donate all the money to Alpine’s Relay for Life.
Please bring your own tables and chairs. All monies raised for space rentals will benefit The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Great Train Robbery
CAMPO — The Mountain Empire Business Association presents the Great Train Robbery, full dress rehearsal, at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo.
The train departs promptly at 4 p.m., on Sunday, May 24.
Guard your belongings and loved ones. Be prepared to face “The Hole In The Wall Gang”.
Tickets are $15 per adult and $7.50 for children 5-15.
The Great Train Robbery and Pit Barbeque is completely sold out on June 13, but you can still come relive the old west in Historic Campo. For tickets and further information go directly to the PSRM.org website and click on tickets or call Randy Lenac for ticket at 478-5403. All proceeds benefit the Campo/Lake Morena Community.

Relay for Life contest
ALPINE — Enter the “Show us your hope, Alpine” contest and display your entry during the week of May 25 to 30.
Everyone is encouraged to participate. We are asking that everyone place a purple ribbon on their mail box, around a tree in their yard, or on their car. Be creative and show us what Hope looks like to you!
Winner will be selected by Alpine’s cancer survivors, caregivers, and families at the relay for Life of Alpine Survivor Luncheon on May 30. Relay For Life of Alpine on June 27-28.
If you or someone you know is a cancer survivor, please contact Dolores Hamilton at deeserena@cox.net to receive an invitation to the luncheon. To enter your display just fill an application form at Postal Annex+ in the Alpine Creek Center, 1347 Tavern Road entry fee is $10 donation to the relay for life of Alpine. All entries must be submitted before close of business on Friday, May 29. Voting will be held on May 30 at the Survivor Luncheon at 1460 Midway Dr., Alpine.

Woman’s Club scholarship
ALPINE — Each year, the Alpine Woman’s Club gives away scholarships to deserving Alpine seniors. This year they will give three $1,000 scholarships to deserving students.
Scholarships are awarded to students who meet the following criteria: They must reside in the Alpine community; they must have a well-developed sense of community participation and/or have been diligently applying themselves in the employment area.
Applications for scholarships must be received by May 31 in order to be considered for the award ceremony on June 16. This deadline cannot be extended. You may obtain a Word document to facilitate completion of the application by sending an e-mail to info@alpinewomansclub.org
To date the Alpine Woman’s Club has given away more than 175 scholarships starting in 1950, totaling more than $80,000. Should you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Foundation at 445-5247 or Margaret Smith 659-0050.

Volunteers needed
PINE VALLEY — Horse of the Sun Equestrian Facility, 12 minutes east of Alpine, is in need of immediate volunteers to help with their Horses Heal Hearts and Team Esteem Programs. Assistance is needed with horse care and support, working with children in specialized equine character and esteem education programs.

Descanso Library events
DESCANSO — On Thursday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m. the Descanso Library will present “Job Interview Techniques” with Cindy Burnham. Cindy is a former human resources executive and job trainer. She will be discussing the do’s and don’ts of interviewing for a job.
Kids, bring your bikes to the Descanso Library Friday, May 15 at 3:30 p.m.
The County Sheriff’s Department will be conducting a Bike Rodeo. Children will ride their bikes through a special course and learn about bike safety.
In celebration of Older American Month, the Descanso Library will be presenting live music by Sheri and Roy. There will also be a table set up with lots of information and give-a-ways for seniors and the disabled, such as health insurance, medicare, long term care and much more.
Jerry Barber, Senior Advocate for the East County, will be giving blood pressure screenings as well. Join us on Saturday, May 23, at 11 a.m.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could use toothbrushes, men’s and woman’s white socks and hairbrushes, and under garments. Ronald McDonald House, next to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital is always in need of these donations. Rady’s is also collecting pull-tabs from soda and beer cans, to be recycled for money.
Ronald McDonald House houses families who have critically ill children in Rady’s Children’s Hospital.
Kiwanis began an effort last year, collecting and donating these items to Ronald McDonald House and they are very happy with Alpine’s collection efforts. Items can be bagged and dropped off at The Alpine Sun office.
Got an old car you want to get rid of? It must have an engine, although doesn’t need to be in running order. Contact Dick Rabell at 445-5712 to make arrangements to have your vehicle picked up and donated. Will be auctioned off and you will be notified.

Meeting with Reps
CAMPO — In light of the severe economic problems facing our nation and state, H.O.P.E. of the Mountain Empire is hosting a meet and greet with Senator Ducheny (Sen. Budget Committee) and Assemblywoman Mary Salas on Saturday, May 30.
The informal meeting will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at 31310 Hwy 94, Campo (Star Ranch main house).
Come meet and talk with your State Representatives and hear what they have to say about issues that affect our local communities. Locally grown Gloriosa wine and cheese will be served.

Dedication ceremony
ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis Club will host a dedication ceremony on May 30 to honor members Reverend Frank Pannitti and Don Cockayne, whose names will be added to The Memorial of Distinguished Kiwanians from Alpine who have passed away.
The ceremony, at the Kiwanis Memorial Gazebo, located at the Alpine Woman’s Club at 9 a.m. The Reverend Chuck Carder who is a member of The Alpine Kiwanis Club will offer the benediction and say a few words.
