Albertson’s Rummage Sale
ALPINE — A community rummage sale and car wash will be held on Saturday May 23 at 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Albertson’s parking lot.
Get two spaces for $10: One to park and the other to display your items. There is limited space so please see Customer Service to reserve your spot.
There are three ways to participate, 1) drop off small items at the Relay for Life area before 8 a.m., 2) Reserve a space and keep all the money you raise, 3) Reserve a space on the Relay for Life side and donate all the money to Alpine’s Relay for Life.
Please bring your own tables and chairs. All monies raised for space rentals will benefit The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

VFW honors veterans
ALPINE — The Alpine VFW Bert Fuller Post #9578 will hold services at Alpine Queen of Angels Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25.
This service is to remember all veterans alive and to honor those who are no longer with us today. The public is invited to attend this ceremony.

Relay for Life contest
ALPINE — Enter the “Show us your hope, Alpine” contest and display your entry during the week of May 25 to 30.
Everyone is encouraged to participate. We are asking that everyone place a purple ribbon on their mail box, around a tree in their yard, or on their car. Wear purple to school or work. If your display of Hope is voted the best, you could win free dinner for two at the
Winner will be selected by Alpine’s cancer survivors, caregivers, and families at the relay for Life of Alpine Survivor Luncheon on May 30. Relay For Life of Alpine on June 27-28.
If you or someone you know is a cancer survivor, please contact Dolores Hamilton at deeserena@cox.net to receive an invitation to the luncheon. To enter your display just fill an application form at Postal Annex+ in the Alpine Creek Center, 1347 Tavern Road entry fee is $10 donation to the relay for life of Alpine and benefits the American cancer society. All entries must be submitted before close of business on Friday, May 29.

Conservation day
EL CAJON — The Blossom valley water task force announces energy & water conservation day on Saturday, May 30 from 1-4 p.m., at 15853 Broad Oaks Road, El Cajon.
The event will feature information on the upcoming water delivery cuts and the level 2 drought alert condition. Padre Dam representatives will be on hand to review individual accounts and answer questions. There will be demonstrations of water conservation measures, products, xeriscape plants and alternatives. The event will be held in blossom valley at the home of Jim Callaghan and is free to the public.

Open House
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Museum will be open to the public on Saturday May 30 and Sunday May 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Both historic houses are owned by the Alpine Historical Society. They are the Dr. Sophronia Nichol’s House built in 1896 and the Capt Adam Beaty house built in 1899. They are located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum.

Woman’s Club
scholarship
ALPINE — Each year, the Alpine Woman’s Club gives away scholarships to deserving Alpine seniors. This year they will give three $1,000 scholarships to deserving students.
Scholarships are awarded to students who reside in the Alpine community; have a well-developed sense of community participation and/or have been diligently applying themselves in the employment area; have shown scholastic achievement; and they must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
Applications for scholarships must be received by May 31. You may obtain a Word document to facilitate completion of the application by e-mailing info@alpinewomansclub.org.

Sunset the Sunrise Powerlink
LAKESIDE — The East County Community Action Coalition (ECCAC) will host a call to action fundraiser on Saturday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hazy Meadows Ranch, 15466 El Monte Rd, Lakeside, CA 92040.
The event to raise awareness and money to fight San Diego Gas & Electric’s proposed Sunrise Powerlink project will feature live music, raffles, silent auctions, games, activities and food.

Meeting with Reps
CAMPO — In light of the severe economic problems facing our nation and state, H.O.P.E. of the Mountain Empire is hosting a meet and greet with Senator Ducheny (Sen. Budget Committee) and Assemblywoman Mary Salas on Saturday, May 30.
The informal meeting will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at 31310 Hwy 94, Campo (Star Ranch main house).
Come meet and talk with your State Representatives and hear what they have to say about issues that affect our local communities. Locally grown Gloriosa wine and cheese will be served.

Dedication ceremony
ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis Club will host a dedication ceremony on May 30 to honor members Reverend Frank Pannitti and Don Cockayne, whose names will be added to The Memorial of Distinguished Kiwanians from Alpine who have passed away.
The ceremony, at the Kiwanis Memorial Gazebo, located at the Alpine Woman’s Club at 9 a.m. The Reverend Chuck Carder who is a member of The Alpine Kiwanis Club will offer the benediction and say a few words.

Book signing
ALPINE — Did you know there was an airport in Alpine? Who is Joan Mac Queen and why was the Middle School named after her? Local author, Carlette Anderson, has discovered some fascinating data while doing research for her new book “My Alpine.”
Ms. Anderson will be doing a book signing at Albertson’s on Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

NRA Family Day
ALPINE — Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club will host a NRA Day Family Shooting Sports Camp at their facility on May 30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Alpine. This free event is open to the public for people over the age of six.
The goal of this event is to introduce families to a variety of shooting sports and outdoor activities in a safe, supervised, and enjoyable environment. Each participant will receive a comprehensive gun safety lesson, gun safety brochure, and free lunch.

Concerts in the Park
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center’s annual Concerts in the Park series is set to begin on Sunday, May 31, with the classic rock and blues/country sounds of the Pine Creek Posse. These free community concerts begin at 5 p.m. each Sunday evening.
This year’s schedule is as follows: May 31 — Pine Creek Posse (classic rock, blues and country); June 7 — Marine Corps Band (military marching band); June 14 — Swamp Critters (danceable good time Louisiana style music); June 21 — Midilin Brother’s Band (Classic rock from the last 50 years), June 28 — The Legends (rock and roll, Motown, and Doo-wop revue); July 5 — Good Mojo (high energy dance rock).
On June 7, when the center hosts the Marine Corps Band there will be a special gathering on the balcony of the ACC. The cost is $10 per person unless you are active duty or a veteran of any branch of the service. Non- hosted bar and light buffet included. Seating is limited, so please RSVP (445-7330 X16) sponsor a table for $150, which includes seating for 10 and a memorial/business acknowledgement on your table.
