Coffee with constituents
ALPINE — San Diego County Board of Supervisor chairman Dianne Jacob will be in Alpine on Friday, Oct. 2, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Alpine Bread Basket, 1347 Tavern Road.
Residents are invited to attend share any ideas, problems or concerns regarding County government.

Between the Stripes
ALPINE — This year’s Lions, Tigers and Bears Between the Stripes event, themed “The Mane Event,” will take place Saturday, Oct 3 from 2 to 6 p.m.
This African safari style fundraiser, in honor of the resident male lion Bakari, will feature a VIP Serengeti Reception as well as an African Sumptuous Safari menu.
There will be musical entertainment provided by Ruby Summer as well as several auction item, including an African Photo Safari for two.
Tickets are on sale now and must be purchased in advance. To purchase tickets go to www.lionstigersandbears.org or call the office at 659-8078.

Chili cook-off in October
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is presenting its 8th Annual Chili Cook off Festival and Annual Show and Shine Car Show on Oct. 3. The event will be held at the Alpine Community Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The organizers of the event are looking for Chili Cookers and applications are being accepted now as there is limited space.
Please contact Don Parker at 672-4269 or Richard Higgins at 672-3861 for additional information. The proceeds from the Cook Off and other Events directly benefit The Alpine Community Center.

Hog Wild
CAMPO — Campo VFW Post 2080 presents its annual Hog Wild Picnic on Saturday, Oct. 3 beginning at noon at the post 301 Sheridan Rd., Campo, off Hwy. 94.
The event features a deep pit barbecue featuring beef, pork, chicken and turkey, along with potato salad and beans. Side dishes are always welcome.
Members and children 12 and under $5, non-members and guests $8. Active military with ID — FREE. Live Music by Blue Dawg from 1-5 p.m. as well as a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and bake sale.

Alpine Viejas Days
ALPINE — The Alpine Viejas Days Parade will step off on Alpine Boulevard at South Grade Road, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. This year’s parade theme is
“Youth in Sports”.
There will also be a Kids & Craft Fair Albertson’s Shopping Center, Health Fair and booths at the Alpine Triangle and Kids Fun Alpine Elementary School. A shuttle will be available to transport children and parents along the various stops on Alpine Boulevard from 10:30 a.m to 5 p.m.
The Alpine Stagecoach Lions Club will also present Fred’s Car Show as part of the Alpine Viejas Days Parade, located behind Fred’s Old Fashioned Burgers, 2754 Alpine Blvd. Proceeds benefit Alpine Stagecoach lions, Fighting Blindness and deafness through Community Service.

CHIRP Garden
Club meeting
ALPINE — Just about everything you ever wondered about Monarch butterflies will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of CHIRP Garden Club on Oct. 7. Meeting, to be held at the Crown Hills Clubhouse, will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.
Two presenters will share an abundance of information about Monarch butterflies, including life cycle basics to highlights of their migration.
The meeting is open to all and free of charge.

Campaign kickoff
for 8th grade trip
ALPINE — Beginning now through Oct. 13, 8th Graders registered on Holt Travel's East Coast educational tour taking place March 27 through April 3, 2010, will receive a $25 Hard Rock Café gift certificate anytime they refer a new 8th grade student and/or parent sign up on this trip who mentions the student's name who referred them. The trip is open to any 8th Graders and their parents from other school and districts outside of Alpine!
The gift certificates will be handed out to qualifying students during the trip. The number of certificates a student can earn is only limited by the number of spots open on the trip.
This is a great opportunity for students to really make a difference in

GUHSD meeting
EL CAJON — Grossmont Union High School District will host a free community event on the future of the district on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at Grossmont High School’s Old Gym, 1100 Murray Drive in El Cajon.
Participants will learn more about the projects planned for each campus, better understand school project timelines, see imagery of the design guidelines for specialty classrooms, find out about the District’s educational vision and program goals, celebrate the future of Grossmont Schools. Refreshments will be served.

32nd annual Rose Show
LAKESIDE — The East County Rose Society will host its 32nd annual fall Rose Show on Saturday, Oct. 3 from noon to 5 p.m. at Barona Resort & Casino Convention Center, 1932 Wildcat Canyon Road, Lakeside.
Admission is $5 and there is no charge to enter your roses. Public entries are welcome from 6 to 9:45 a.m.

Spaghetti dinner
ALPINE — The Harbison Canyon Kids Club is hosting a spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Old Ironside Park Community Center, 326 Harbison Canyon Road.
Dinner is by donation and all proceeds go to support the Harbison Canyon aftershool program.

Camp Oliver celebrates 60 years
DESCANSO — On Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1-4 p.m., Camp Oliver will be celebrating 60 years of camping fun. Located in Descanso, Camp Oliver is a non-profit residential summer camp and retreat center.
The anniversary party will include Arts & Crafts, Archery, participation in our Low Elements Ropes Course, Mexican food catered by our local Descanso Junction Restaurant and is free for the whole family.
During the event, we will also be honoring the life of Mr. C.J. “Pat” Paderewski — the recently deceased architect and board member of Camp Oliver.

Craft and harvest
festival
ALPINE — Alpine Country Gifts and Crafts presents its 16th anniversary craft and harvest festival on Oct. 8 through 11 at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Blvd.
Hours are: Thursday, Oct. 8 — 4 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9 — 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10 — 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 11 — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Garden Club tour
ALPINE — The Alpine Garden Club will be going on a tour of "The Water Conservation Garden" at Cuyamama College on Saturday, Oct.10.
The tour starts at 10:30 a.m. and they will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Alpine Woman's Club. The docent -lead tour promotes water-conservation landscape through beautiful exhibits and programs that teach and inspire the general public. The tour is free of charge and everyone will go away from this gathering with such tips as water-wise landscaping, mulching, the grouping of plants together and fall garden planting.
Following the tour they will go to the October Fest for lunch. If anyone is interested in joining them please call Kathy Bartonicek 445-8326.

Campo Cougar festival
CAMPO — The Campo Cougar Club presents its October festival on Saturday, Oct. 10 from noon to 8 p.m. at Star Ranch, 31310 Highway 94 in Campo.
Activities will include: Horse Shoe Tournament (entry fee), barbecue Cook-off (entry fee), Chili Cook-off (entry fee), booths, Petting Zoo, Rides, Inflatables, Hay rides, Pumpkin patch and carving area, live music featuring the Pine Valley Posse, Haunted house, Clowns, Fire, police, K-9 demo, face painting, and much more.

AFPD open house
ALPINE — The Alpine Fire Protection District will host its annual open house on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the station on Tavern Road.

Home tour planning
ALPINE — The Alpine Woman’s Club is planning their Fifth Annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, Dec. 6, if they can find three more homes.
They are looking for volunteers to open their lovely homes that reflect the homeowners style of decorating for the holidays. If you are selling your home this can be a unique opportunity to show case it at this festive time of year.
The proceeds from this fundraiser go towards the preservation and maintenance of the Historic Town Hall as well providing academic scholarships for Alpine seniors.
