Choir fall session
ALPINE — The Community Youth Choir (CYC) is beginning its fall session. Weekly voice lessons are on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at Christ The King Episcopal Church, 1460 Midway Dr., Alpine.
Classes begin Oct. 15 and there will be a recital on Dec. 17. Tuition is $65 for 10 weeks including recital. This session features a holiday theme from the movie soundtrack “The Polar Express”.

AFPD open house
ALPINE — The Alpine Fire Protection District will host its annual open house on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the station on Tavern Road.
The event will feature various fire and law enforcement safety booths, demonstrations as well as food. Stop by the station at 1364 Tavern Road.

Yo-Yo Pros
ALPINE —Duncan 80th Anniversary World Tour Crew will be at Christy's Toy Outlet and Viejas Outlet Center participating in the Smokin in the Park Barbecue Festival on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come and see the Duncan Crew perform all kind of Yo-Yo tricks.

Old West Harvest Fest
BOULEVARD — Every October, Sacred Rocks Reserve hosts the Old West Harvest Fest, open to the public. This year’s event will take place Friday to Sunday Oct. 23-25.
Everyone from near and far, Southern California to out of state, camper or local resident, is invited to kick up their heels and celebrate the bounty of autumn at our beautiful nature reserve.

Author talk
DESCANSO — The Descanso Branch of the San Diego County Library will be presenting Leland Fetzer, local author on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 11 a.m.
Mr. Fetzer is the author of several books on local history.

Disney Quiz Night
ALPINE — Creekside Early Learning Center will host its annual fundraiser, the Disney Quiz Night, on Tuesday, Oct. 27 fro 5 to 8 p.m. in the Viejas Dreamcatcher Lounge.
CELC’s PTA and staff host this adults-only event, made possible by many local businesses and individuals. The evening includes hors d’oeuvres, opportunity drawings, auctions and a competitive game of sports, music and Disney trivia.
Seating is available and reservations are being taken now at $25 per person or $150 for a table of eight. Proceeds benefit CELC and its students.

Smokin’ in the park
ALPINE — Viejas Casino & Outlet Center will “Smokin’ in the Park” BBQ Championship & Festival for its 5th year, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.
This year, more than 60 teams will compete for $23,000 in cash and prizes, making it the largest competition of its kind in the state. An exciting new feature this year will be the People’s Choice Award and has expanded to include two stages of live entertainment; multiple beer gardens with craft beers; a kids play area; vendors; and all the sights, sounds and smells a barbeque lover can handle.

Italian feast
ALPINE —On Sunday, Oct. 18, Judge Howatt will become Philip Crosthwaite and will tell the stories of Yankee Jim, hung in Old Town on Sept. 18, 1852, and the Roy Bean/John Collins duel on horseback, which also took place in Old Town in 1852.
In addition to this much-anticipated program, the Board of the Alpine Historical Society will be serving an Italian Feast. The feast will feature various pasta dishes, salads, hot bread, dessert and drinks. The cost of this dinner will be $8 for adults and $5 for children.

Miracle Mile of Quarters Golf Tournament
EL CAJON — The Alpine Kiwanis are hosting their 20th annual Golf Tournament and dinner on Friday, Oct. 23. This event is held at the Sycuan Resort golf course in El Cajon.
In the evening, visitors can stay and enjoy a banquet dinner with fellow Alpine Kiwanian and San Diego Padres announcer Mark Grant and his friends as they conduct a lively sports memorabilia auction and raffle drawing.
