APG vacancy
ALPINE — The Alpine Planning Group is looking for an interested individual to fill one open seat on the 15-member board. The APG is responsible for advising the county on issues of planning and land-use in the area.
General meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month, 6:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.

Run for Mayor
ALPINE — Please “file” your intention to serve as Alpine’s community ambassador with the Alpine Chamber Community Foundation. All proceeds from all candidates campaign contributions will be invested in Alpine youth and our schools.
All “candidate filings” must be returned to the Alpine Chamber of
Commerce, 2707 Alpine Blvd., Alpine CA 91901 or faxed to 445-2871, by Sept. 18. The winner will be announced on Dec. 1, at the holiday breakfast to be held at Viejas DreamCatcher Lounge.

AFPD CPR class
ALPINE — The Alpine Fire Protection District will host a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) class open to the public. The class is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the fire station at 1364 Tavern Road.
The cost for the class is $17 and includes course completion card. Class size is limited to 20 students please call 445-2635 to reserve a spot in the class or visit www.alpinefire.org for more information.

CPR/First Aid class
DESCANSO — There will be a CPR/First Aid Certification Class at the Descanso Library on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Descanso Fire Safe Council will provide a continental breakfast. You can bring your own lunch or go to one of the local establishments during the lunch break. There is a $10 fee to cover the cost of material.
Please call the Descanso Library (445-5279) to register for this class. The library is located at 9545 River Dr., Descanso.

Deep pit barbecue
ALPINE — The Alpine Bert Fuller VFW Post 9578 is hosting its Annual Deep Pit Barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the post, 844 Tavern Road, Alpine.
The event is open to the public and features food, drinks and music from The Kemosabe Band performing between 2 and 5 p.m. Tickets for the event can be bought in advance for $10 and at the door for $12, and all proceeds from the event go to the Wounded Warriors Project.

PLAY day in Alpine
ALPINE — Sunday, Sept. 20 is the first anniversary of PLAY, Parkland for Alpine Youth.
Two Alpine businesses are joining together to help PLAY achieve their financial goal of raising money for sports facilities for all of Alpine. Atria Salon Professionals and the Alpine Inn have set aside this day to set donate their daily sales for PLAY.
The Atria Salon Professionals will be open Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. providing hair services to children and adults. Their hair professionals are donating their time and day off for this event. All proceeds will be donated to PLAY. A percentage of the Alpine Inn’s daily sales are being donated to PLAY.

Alpine Viejas Days
ALPINE — The Alpine Viejas Days Parade will step off on Alpine Boulevard at South Grade Road, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. This year’s parade theme is “Youth in Sports”.
There will also be a Kids & Craft Fair Albertson’s Shopping Center, Health Fair and booths at the Alpine Triangle and Kids Fun Alpine Elementary School. A shuttle will be available to transport children and parents along the various stops on Alpine Boulevard from 10:30 a.m to 5 p.m.
The Alpine Stagecoach Lions Club will also present Fred’s Car Show as part of the Alpine Viejas Days Parade, located behind Fred’s Old Fashioned Burgers, 2754 Alpine Blvd. Proceeds benefit Alpine Stagecoach lions, Fighting Blindness and deafness through Community Service.

Alpaca farm days
ALPINE —On Saturday, September 26th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the East County Alpaca Breeders (ECAB) of San Diego will welcome guests to join them for many activities including alpacas on display, photo opportunities, spinning and fiber arts demonstration, fiber project for kids, Alpaca composting 101 w/free samples, and lunch-time barbecue, all free.
The ECAB National Alpaca Farm Day event will be located at Jamul Feed Store, 13966 Campo Rd., Jamul; directly across from the Jamul Post Office. Each ranch will be open for tours on Sunday, the 27. Check the web site for more details.

Banned book
discussion
EL CAJON — Grossmont College’s English Department is inviting the public to a free discussion of banned books at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Griffin Gate, a meeting room located in the Student Center on campus.
The discussion will be hosted by English instructor Joe Medina. The event is part of this year’s Banned Books Week (Sept. 26-Oct. 3). The annual national celebration of the freedom to read was launched in 1982 in response to challenges over certain books in schools, bookstores and libraries.

ALPINE — San Diego County Board of Supervisor chairman Dianne Jacob will be in Alpine on Friday, Oct. 2, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Alpine Bread Basket, 1347 Tavern Road.
Residents are invited to attend share any ideas, problems or concerns regarding County government.

Between the Stripes
ALPINE — This year’s Lions, Tigers and Bears Between the Stripes event, themed “The Mane Event,” will take place Saturday, Oct 3 from 2 to 6 p.m.
This African safari style fundraiser, in honor of the resident male lion Bakari, will feature a VIP Serengeti Reception as well as an African Sumptuous Safari menu.
There will be musical entertainment provided by Ruby Summer as well as several auction item, including an African Photo Safari for two.

Chili cook-off
in October
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine is presenting its 8th Annual Chili Cook off and Annual Show and Shine Car Show on Oct. 3.
The Event will be held at The Alpine Community Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

32nd annual Rose Show
LAKESIDE - The East County Rose Society will host its 32nd annual fall Rose Show on Saturday, Oct. 3 from noon to 5 p.m. at Barona Resort & Casino Convention Center, 1932 Wildcat Canyon Road, Lakeside.
Admission is $5 and there is no charge to enter your roses. Public entries are welcome from 6 to 9:45 a.m.
