APG vacancy
ALPINE — The Alpine Planning Group is looking for an interested individual to fill one open seat on the 15-member board.
The APG is responsible for advising the county on issues of planning and land-use in the area. General meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month, 6:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
Interested individuals should attend the next APG meeting on Thursday, March 25, to present themselves as a candidate. For more information please contact APG chairman Greg Fox at GregRFoxJr@aol.com.

Alpine Academy Star Party
ALPINE—Everyone is invited to see the wonders of the sky at the JCS-Alpine Academy Star Party, on Friday March 19 located at 1832 Alpine Blvd., next to the Alpine Community Center.
The San Diego Astronomy Association will visit with a collection of large, high- powered telescopes, which will be available to look through. These experienced and knowledgeable astronomers will be on-hand to explain what we are seeing and answer questions. This is a free event. Please call 445-1525 for more information.

Alpine Woman’s Club membership drive
ALPINE—The Alpine Woman’s Club was established in 1914 and was originally known as the Ladies Aid Society. This nostalgic club has met every month for the past 96 years. Membership has always been by invitation only. However this year, for the first time in the club's history, they are opening membership to women who live in Alpine and the surrounding areas including El Cajon, Flynn Springs, Blossom Valley, Crest, Descanso, Pine Valley, Boulevard, Lake Moreno, Campo, etc. who are interested in the preservation of the historic Town Hall as well as the scholarship program for local students.
They meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 12 p.m. at the Town Hall 2156 Alpine Blvd. If you are interested in attending their complimentary luncheon please call Barbara Hendrix at 659-0423, to reserve your place. Seating is limited.

Alpine Sheriff’s Station Open House
ALPINE—Everyone is welcome to come the Alpine Sheriff’s Station Open House on Saturday, March 20, 2010,beginning at 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. located at 2751 Alpine Blvd.
There will be Law Enforcement displays, Sheriff’s Recruiting Reserves, Explorer Program, Senior Volunteers, and a Sheriff’s Canine Unit Demonstration.

ALFA news: Help us Build a New Library
ALPINE—March Madness begins this month, and the bookstore has a great selection of sports books –All paperback novels will be 1/2 off from 3/10 – 3/14; all history books will be 1/2 off from 3/17 – 3/21; and all religious books 1/2 off from 3/24 – 3/28. Our end of the month 1/2 off sale is 3/27 and 28. All profits go to the Library fund.

Income tax prep
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center is hosting a free income tax preparation class for senior citizens, low-income citizens and the disabled on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.

Bunco
ALPINE—The Alpine Lions Club is hosting a "Bunco" event on Friday March 26, 2010 6pm at the Alpine Woman's Club located at 2156 Alpine Blvd. to benefit longtime resident Alice Villa.
Alice is a Charter Member of the Alpine Lions Club and has received the honor of Lion of the Year several times and in 2002 Lion of the Decade. In 2005 she was named Honorary Mayor of Alpine. She was a familiar face for 36 years at the Alpine Pharmacy. A lot of people know Alice, she's a quiet person who has gives alot to the community. Alice has Thrombocytopenia, an immune deficiency disorder. Thrombocytopeniacan cause abnormal bleeding.

ACC tennis
ALPINE — Spring into action with tennis classes offered at the ACC beginning in March.
ACC teaching pro, Rene Toscano will provide a large variety of classes fitting all age groups and player ability levels. After school youth classes, as well as adult morning and evening classes will headline a majority of classes.
High School student athletes are encouraged to take advantage of specialized training classes intended to prepare players to improve tennis skills and game strategies necessary to compete at a higher level.

Library scholarship
DESCANSO — The Friends of the Descanso Library is awarding its second annual $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who lives in Descanso 91916 zip code area.
Applications may be picked up at the San Diego County Library, Descanso Branch, 9545 River Drive, Descanso, beginning March 8. Application deadline is April 24.

Parent workshop

Luke Barbour Scholarship
DESCANSO—Win a $1,000 scholarship and save your parents some money. . . The Luke Barbour Scholarship applications are now available inside Perkins Store and the Descanso Library. $1,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded to a graduating senior with a “B” average who is a resident of Descanso and/or the son/daughter of a Town Hall member.
The competition will consist of a 500 word essay and oral interview. Deadline for the essay is April 2nd, and the interview date is April 18th. The scholarship is good for beauty school, vocational school, or any accredited junior college, college, or university.

ALFA Sponsors an Evening with Author Richard Carrico
ALPINE—On Thursday, March25th at 6:30 PM at the Alpine Library, Richard Carrico will be speaking about his book “Strangers in a Stolen Land”. After the talk there will be a book signing and refreshments will be served.
Richard Carrico is a principal in the firm Recuerdos Research and a lecturer in the Department of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University and at Cuyamaca Community College. He has an M. A. in History from the University of San Diego and B. A. degrees in History and Anthropology from San Diego State University. While at SDSU, Richard served as the field director for large-scale archaeological excavations at the Bancroft Ranch House in Spring Valley and the Presidio of San Diego above Old Town. He resides in Ramona, California with his wife where he raises wine grapes and makes wine under the Rockhill Vineyard label.

Easter Egg Geo-Caching
BOULEVARD—Sacred Rocks Reserve and RV Park, located in the mountains just 60 miles east of San Diego, is offering a Geo-Caching Easter Egg Treasure Hunt for families of all ages on Saturday, March 27, 2010 from 10 am to 4 pm. At 9 am, a refresher GPS Navigation course will also be offered. The "Easter Egg" Treasure Hunt on the 163 acre property will give participants a chance to enjoy the early spring bloom with their families while seeking six geo-caches using their own GPS receiver. (Car GPS receivers will not work). Prizes will be given. A hot dog roast and campfire will be included at the conclusion of the event at approximately 5 pm. Cost is $8 per person and includes use of the park's facilities for the day. A special 25% discount is being offered for military families for tent and RV camping site fees that weekend. 4-H Amigos looking for members
ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4H Club is looking for new members from the ages of 5-19.
4H is a kid's club that provides learning opportunities such as horses, dogs, community service, archery, and judging. 4-H is looking for members and adult leaders that would be interested in Small animals, Biking, Leather Making, Lego, Computer, Garden, Arts and Crafts or any other fun projects you would like to add.
The most popular program is the Horse project, which lets children that are 9-19 years old learn how to ride a horse in a safe, fun environment.

Fishing at Lake Cuyamaca
CUYAMACA—The tackle shop is open every day at 6 a.m., closing at 4:40 p.m. You may fish until sundown. There is a mid-week motorboat special, Monday through Thursday, $25. for the day.
We still have the free fishing classes every Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
