GUHSD to discuss high school name
     EL CAJON —On Thursday, Feb. 11, at its regular meeting the Grossmont Union High School District will receive a request to add the naming of the new Alpine high school to their March board agenda.
     GUHSD Board Member Jim Kelly will request a motion tonight to name the new high school, “Ronald Reagan High School.” Kelly stated that by the time the new school opens, many of the students will have no idea who Ronald Reagan was and he hopes that the memory of the accomplishments of the former President will be preserved by the naming.
     Interested parties should make plans to attend the board meeting in February and March to voice their support or opposition to the plan.

Father-Daughter dance
     ALPINE — The annual Father & Daughter Sweetheart Dance will take place Friday, Feb. 12, at the Alpine Community Center beginning at 6 p.m.
The cost is $35 per couple and will include a special gift for each young lady, free Portraits, Live DJ, refreshments and Royal Princess Magic. Meet the Miss Alpine Princess titleholders.
     This event sell out each year, so don’t miss it. Tickets are on a first come, first served basis. Tickets available: Alpine Community Center, Jami Lou’s Place & The Dragonfly Salon/Day Spa.

Job fair
     EL CAJON — Fifty potential employers will be available to talk with job hunters from Alpine, the Mountain Empire and elsewhere on Feb. 19 at Congressman Duncan Hunter’s Community Job Fair in El Cajon. Hunter is partnering with the East County Career Center to provide a successful job fair for businesses, veterans and qualified job seekers.
     The Friday event will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Ronald Reagan Community Center, 195 E. Douglas Ave., next to the El Cajon Library.

Albertsons community fair
     ALPINE — The Albertsons 3rd Annual Community Fair in Alpine, sponsored by Albertsons and the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce, vendor space and admission is free at the big event on Saturday, Feb. 20.
     The fun will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alpine Albertsons parking lot at 2955 Alpine Blvd. Businesses and organizations in Alpine and the Mountain Empire who would like to take advantage of the free vendor space while it is still available can call the Chamber at (619) 445-2722 or e-mail Kelly@alpinechamber.com. Vendors need to bring their own tables, chairs and canopies.

Historical Society pot luck
     ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Pot Luck Luncheon is open to the community and a great place to learn more about historic Alpine. It will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Boulevard.
     Following the luncheon Virginia Christman, who is a member of the Viejas Tribal Council, will be their featured speaker. Christman actively works to enrich the San Diego community’s knowledge of her native culture and carries on the Kumeyaay traditions of singing and dancing. Community hike
     ALPINE — The Alpine Planning Group Trails and Conservation Subcommittee will hold its next community hike on Monday, Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m.
The group will be hiking the Viejas Mountain Trail. This hike is three miles, rising a total of 1,000 feet. Should take about 45 minutes to and hour for most hikers to reach the top, or you can walk a shorter distance.
     Directions: From center of Alpine, Go East on Alpine Boulevard to the Albertson’s corner, then turn left (north) onto Victoria Drive for 1 mile , then right on Anderson Truck Trail Road, past the water tower and onto the dirt road for another half-mile. Where the road widens considerably, the trailhead, slightly south of the widest part of the road, is on the east side of the road up a small embankment, and is marked by two posts (Thomas Guide 1234;E3).

Republican Women membership luncheon
     ALPINE — Mt. Empire Republican Women Federated (MERWF) will host its Annual Membership Luncheon at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, in the Clubhouse of Alpine Mobile Home Estates, 2400 Alpine Blvd.
     This is a perfect opportunity for ladies interested in promoting conservative values to discover who we are and what we do.

Back Country boot camp
     ALPINE — Help realize those new years resolutions. Back Country Boot Camp is back in session and meets every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5:30 and 9:15 a.m. at the Alpine Community Center Park. New evening classes are starting on Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. in the Alpine Community Center.

Free guitar lessons
     ALPINE — On Friday, Feb. 19, Middle and High School students are invited participate in free beginning guitar lessons. Father Keith Acker will be teaching the class from 5-5:45 pm on Friday afternoons at the SCAIR Learning Center (2250 Alpine Blvd).
     The instruction is for beginners. Students need to bring their own guitar; electric and acoustic guitars can be used for the class (a few loaner guitars are available). There are other free classes for teens that already have learned the basics.
     The New Beginner’s Class is limited to 10 students so reservations are required. Sign-up for the classes can be made by e-mail (FrKeithA@AlpineAnglican.com) or by leaving your name, phone number and grade at 722-1772.

Woman of the year
     State Assemblyman Joel Anderson is pleased to announce that he is currently accepting nominations for the Woman of the Year award for Assembly District 77.
     A woman may be nominated for exemplary service to the community, outstanding leadership or civic achievement. The Woman of the Year will receive an official Assembly Resolution and will be recognized on the floor of the State Assembly on March 8.
     Nominations may be submitted to Assemblyman Anderson by filling out the nomination form http://arc.asm.ca.gov/member/77/ or by calling the district office at 441-2322. Applications must be received by Feb. 25.

Victorian Tea
     ALPINE — The Alpine Womans Club cordially invites you to the Seventeenth Annual Victoria Tea, to be held at the Alpine Woman’s Club (2156 Alpine Boulevard) on Saturday, Feb. 27.
     The noon seating is already full, so reserve your spot for the 3 p.m. seating now. There will be door prizes and opportunity drawings. Cost is $25 per person.
