ALPINE — The Alpine Planning
Group is looking for an interested individual to fill one
open seat on the 15-member board.
The APG is responsible for advising the county on
issues of planning and land-use in the area. General
meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of every month,
6:30 p.m. at the Alpine Community Center.
Interested individuals should attend the next APG
meeting on Thursday, Feb. 25, to present themselves as a

Income tax prep
ALPINE — The Alpine Community Center is hosting a free
income tax preparation class for senior citizens, low-income
citizens and the disabled on Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at
the center, 1830 Alpine Blvd.

ALPINE — February is the month for Romance, so all
Alpine Library Friends Association Romance novels will be
half price throughout the month.
Buy one children’s book and get one of the same or
lesser value free during the first week, non-fiction

store.

Artist call
ALPINE — Calling all crafters, artists, and non-profit
organizations. The 13th Annual Alpine Sage and Songbirds
Festival for May 1-2, is now accepting applications for
booths at the Viejas Outlet Center.

Historical Society pot luck
ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Pot Luck
Luncheon is open to the community and a great place to learn
more about historic Alpine. It will be held on Sunday, Feb.
21 at 1 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine
Boulevard.
Following the luncheon Virginia Christman, who is a
member of the Viejas Tribal Council, will be their featured
speaker. Christman actively works to enrich the San Diego
community’s knowledge of her native culture and carries on
the Kumeyaay traditions of singing and dancing. You may come
for the luncheon and the speaker at 1 p.m. or arrive at
around 2 p.m. for the speaker only.

Community hike
ALPINE — The Alpine Planning Group Trails and
Conservation Subcommittee will hold its next community hike
on Monday, Feb. 22 at 2:30 p.m.
The group will be hiking the Viejas Mountain Trail.
This hike is three miles, rising a total of 1,000 feet.
Should take about 45 minutes to and hour for most hikers to
reach the top, or you can walk a shorter distance. Any
distance provides great views of Alpine and the coast most
of the way.
Directions: From center of Alpine, Go East on Alpine
Boulevard to the Albertson’s corner, then turn left (north)
onto Victoria Drive for 1 mile , then right on Anderson
Truck Trail Road, past the water tower and onto the dirt
road for another half-mile. Where the road widens
considerably, park on either shoulder of the road. The
trailhead, slightly south of the widest part of the road, is
on the east side of the road up a small embankment, and is
marked by two posts (Thomas Guide 1234; E3).
Victorian Tea
ALPINE — The Alpine Woman’s Club cordially invites you
to the Seventeenth Annual Victoria Tea, to be held at the
Alpine Woman’s Club (2156 Alpine Boulevard) on Saturday,
Feb. 27.
The noon seating is already full, so reserve your spot
for the 3 p.m. seating now. There will be door prizes and
opportunity drawings. Cost is $25 per person.

Ham radio class
PINE VALLEY — There will be a one day class and exam
for people to become Ham Radio operators at the Pine Valley
Fire Department Trailer on Saturday, Feb. 27, from 8 a.m. to
5 p.m.
The class is free, but the license charge is $5. People
who would like to attend should bring a lunch.

Free guitar lessons
ALPINE — On Friday, Feb. 19,
Middle and High School students are invited participate in
free beginning guitar lessons. Father Keith Acker will be
teaching the class from 5-5:45 pm on Friday afternoons at
the SCAIR Learning Center (2250 Alpine Blvd).
The instruction is for beginners. Students need to
bring their own guitar; electric and acoustic guitars can be
used for the class (a few loaner guitars are available).
Basic fingering and sight reading will be taught. There are
other free classes for teens that already have learned the
basics.
Fr. Keith has been teaching guitar for 20 years. And
you don’t have to pay for the class — it is the Free Teen
Guitar Class.
The New Beginner’s Class is limited to 10 students so
reservations are required. Sign-up for the classes can be

Job fair
EL CAJON — Fifty potential employers will be available
to talk with job hunters from Alpine, the Mountain Empire
and elsewhere on Feb. 19 at Congressman Duncan Hunter’s
Community Job Fair in El Cajon. Hunter is partnering with
the East County Career Center to provide a successful job
fair for businesses, veterans and qualified job seekers.
The Friday event will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the
Ronald Reagan Community Center, 195 E. Douglas Ave., next to
the El Cajon Library.
Job seekers who plan to attend are being encouraged to
“Dress to Impress and Bring Resumes!” because employers will
be looking for the best people available.

Albertsons community fair
ALPINE — The Albertsons 3rd Annual Community Fair in
Alpine, sponsored by Albertsons and the Alpine Mountain
Empire Chamber of Commerce, vendor space and admission is
free at the big event on Saturday, Feb. 20.
The fun will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alpine
Albertsons parking lot at 2955 Alpine Blvd. Every year the
fair, open to residents, businesses and organizations
throughout Alpine and the Mountain Empire, has gotten bigger
and better.

Empire who would like to take advantage of the free vendor

Woman of the year
State Assemblyman Joel Anderson is pleased to announce
that he is currently accepting nominations for the Woman of
the Year award for Assembly District 77.
A woman may be nominated for exemplary service to the
community, outstanding leadership or civic achievement. The
Woman of the Year, which will be chosen from the pool of
nominees submitted by the community, will receive an
official Assembly Resolution and will be recognized on the
floor of the State Assembly on March 8.

Customer appreciation day
ALPINE —The Alpine Library is hosting Customer
Appreciation Day on Friday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 4 pm.
This is everyone’s chance to come and meet the Library
Director, Jose Aponte. Refreshments will be provided by the
Alpine Library Friends Association. With your new membership
to ALFA, you will receive a free book.
Fines will be waived all day on any items that are

CHIRP meeting
ALPINE — CHIRP Garden Club will hear from an expert in
creating recirculating water features at its next meeting,
set for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 3 in the Crown Hills
Clubhouse.
Bob Graham of Alpine Waterfeatures and Landscape has
designed and built a large percentage of the most attractive
water features in the area. An expert on the subject, he
specializes in waterscapes that integrate into the natural
flow of the land, and recycle the water for water
conservation.
The meeting is open to the public and there is no
charge.
Library scholarship
DESCANSO — The Friends of the Descanso Library is
awarding its second annual $1,000 scholarship to a
graduating senior who lives in Descanso 91916 zip code area.
Applications may be picked up at the San Diego County
Library, Descanso Branch, 9545 River Drive, Descanso,
beginning March 8. Application deadline is April 24. |
