organizations. The 13th Annual Alpine Sage and Songbirds
Festival for May 1-2, is now accepting applications for
booths at the Viejas Outlet Center.
Thousands attend this event yearly from all over the
southwest — this is a great opportunity to showcase your

Homeownership fair
EL CAJON — If you own a home, or would like to own your
home – be better informed by attending the 5th Annual East
County Homeownership Fair on Saturday, Jan. 16, in El Cajon.
The Fair will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ronald
Reagan Community Center located at 195 East Douglas Avenue,
in Downtown El Cajon. Admission and parking are free.
Information will be available for both prospective and
current homeowners seeking guidance and counseling regarding
foreclosure prevention. Event exhibitors will be on hand
from the real estate, lending, homeownership counseling,
foreclosure prevention, and tax professions. Multiple
workshops will be offered on loan modification procedures,
foreclosure prevention, home buying and financial literacy,
and much more — all to help you learn what you need to know
about homeownership. You will also find one-on-one
confidential counseling, plus fun activities for the kids.

Free community chipping
ALPINE — The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council is
hosting a free community chipping event on Friday, Jan. 22
for Central Alpine (Zone 3). Must register at least 7 days
prior—need not be present.
Restrictions Apply: First come, first served. Limb
diameter restricted to 8 inches. No mud, rocks, construction
debris, or trash. No fibrous material (palm fronds, bamboo,
etc.) No material from businesses, contractors, or
professional landscapers. Crews are unable to chip brush
that has been mechanically removed from the ground by
tractors/heavy machinery.
Stack material with cut ends facing the street. You are
responsible for hauling material to street. Multiple piles
are permitted. Contractors used by GAFSC comply with daily
work restrictions of the San Diego County Project Activity
Level System.

E-Waste collection
EL CAJON — The Steele Canyon High School Class of 2013
is hosting an e-waste collection drive on Saturday, Jan. 23,
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the campus of Steele Canyon High
School. Class members want to recycle all of your unwanted
electronics free of charge. The material collected at this
event will raise money for the Class of 2013.
In addition to accepting cell phones, computers,
monitors and televisions, mice, keyboards, record players,
VCR’s, video tapes, CD’s, DVD’s, stereo equipment, ink and
toner cartridges, video game equipment — any other kind of
electronic material will be accepted. Not accepted: All
types of lighting, household batteries, car batteries,
paint, mercury containing devices, appliances, universal
waste, and non-electronic waste.
If you are a business looking to contribute material to
this event but cannot at the listed times, please contact
our Office Receptionist to see if a route is scheduled in
your area for ‘free’ pickup!

Powerlink town hall meeting
ALPINE — Second District Supervisor Dianne Jacob will
host a community town hall meeting on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6
p.m. at the Alpine Community Center, to discuss the proposed
Sunrise Powerlink and the undergrounding project that will
take place along Alpine Boulevard.
Alpine residents and business owners are encouraged to
attend to ask questions, raise concerns and discuss plans
regarding the project and its effect on the local community.
Book and bake sale
ALPINE —Good Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and
Alpine Community Church is hosting a gigantic two-day book
and bake sale. The sale will be held at Fuller Hall 2225
West Victoria on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
Sunday Jan. 17 from noon until 4 p.m.
In addition to books and home made baked goods, CD’s,
DVD’s and other audio/visual items will be for sale. The
proceeds from the sale will be applied to the education
building roof repairs.
Kiwanis Youth Olympics
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will hold its
annual Youth Olympics on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Alpine
Elementary School.
8:30 a.m. Registration, Receive Bib number and Olympian
Pin. 9 a.m. Opening Ceremonies & Competition Begins. 10:30
a.m. Competition Concludes. 10:30-11:30 Magician Performance
(The Amazing Dana). 11:30-12:30 Medal Presentation,
Conclusion of Games.
There will be 12 events: Basketball Dribble, Basketball
Free Throw, Long Jump, 20 Meter Races, Rope Skipping, 40
Meter Races, Pull/Chin Ups, 60 Meter Races, Soccer Ball
Dribble, Sit Ups, Softball Throw, and Bicycle Gymkhana
Competition will be by age group divisions: 4/5/6, 7/8,
9/10 and 11/12/13. Boys and girls will compete separately.
Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for
each event, each division, boys and girls.
Tree town meeting
ALPINE — This year the tree people will be working with
some of the local elementary schools to set up tree programs
in the classrooms. They are also gearing up for their Second
Annual Tree Town event.
If you love trees and are interested in learning more
about how you can get involved then plan to attend their
next meeting on Wednesday, Jan 20 at the Alpine Chamber
office, 2707 Alpine Blvd at 5:30 p.m.
