Boot camp
     ALPINE— Help realize those new years resolutions. Back Country Boot Camp is back in session and meets every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 and 9:15 a.m. at the Alpine Community Center Park.
     These workouts deliver time tested and measurable fitness improvements. Come and join us to achieve your New Years fitness goals before summer.

CHIRP Garden Club
     ALPINE — A live Barn Owl and Red-Tailed Hawk will be special guests at the Feb. 3 meeting of CHIRP Garden Club, set for 6:30 p.m. at Crown Hills Clubhouse in Crown Hills, Alpine.
     A special program about these birds, and other birds of prey, will be presented by Nancy Conney of Sky Hunters Raptor Rehabilitation and Education.
     Club members and guests will watch a short, educational video about owls, hawks, eagles, falcons and other raptors, and a program by Conney will follow. Those in attendance will have a rare opportunity to get up-close and personal with two of these magnificent birds that are usually only seen perched on a distant telephone pole or flying overhead.
     The meeting is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome.

Law Enforcement Appreciation
     ALPINE — The Alpine Kiwanis Club will be holding its annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on Saturday, Feb. 6.
     A member of the CHP, Border Patrol and the Sheriff’s Department will be honored at the Saturday morning meeting at 7 a.m. held at Alpine Elementary School.
     Also present will be Joel Anderson, 77th District Assemblyman representative who will present recipients a Resolution from the State of California Legislative Office. Congressman Hunter’s office will also be represented to present honors.

Dustbowl historian
     DESCANSO — The Descanso Library will be presenting songs and stories from the Dustbowl Era on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m.
     Ross Moore, singer and historian will talk about the trials and tribulations people had to go through during the 1930’s. You will learn how the great American icon, Woody Guthrie, influenced music through stories of his often tragic life. Ross Moore will be singing some of these biographical songs.

Father-Daughter dance
     ALPINE — The annual Father & Daughter Sweetheart Dance will take place Friday, Feb. 12, at the Alpine Community Center beginning at 6 p.m.
     The cost is $35 per couple and will include a special gift for each young lady, free Portraits, Live DJ, refreshments and Royal Princess Magic. Meet the Miss Alpine Princess titleholders.
     This event sell out each year, so don’t miss it. Tickets are on a first come, first served basis. Tickets available: Alpine Community Center, Jami Lou’s Place & The Dragonfly Salon/Day Spa.

Albertson’s community fair
     ALPINE — The Albertsons 3rd Annual Community Fair in Alpine, sponsored by Albertsons and the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce, vendor space and admission is free at the big event on Saturday, Feb. 20.
     The fun will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alpine Albertsons parking lot at 2955 Alpine Blvd. Every year the fair, open to residents, businesses and organizations throughout Alpine and the Mountain Empire, has gotten bigger and better.
    Businesses and organizations in Alpine and the Mountain Empire who would like to take advantage of the free vendor space while it is still available can call the Chamber at (619) 445-2722 or e-mail Kelly@alpinechamber.com. Vendors need to bring their own tables, chairs and canopies.

Cox heroes scholarships
    
SAN DIEGO — Cox Heroes scholarships, in denominations of $2,500 or $10,000, are available for San Diego County adults, military dependents and high school seniors who dream of furthering their education.
     To be considered for a Cox Heroes scholarship, applicants must meet the criteria and file their completed, postmarked application by Friday, Jan. 29. Community chipping day
     ALPINE — Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council will host a Community Chipping Day on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 5221 Willows Road from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Historical Society open
     ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Museum will be open to the public on Saturday, Jan. 30 and Sunday, Jan. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.
     This is a great opportunity to tour two historic homes plus an old school house. Learn all about Alpine’s history from knowledgeable docents.
     The museum is located at 2116 Tavern Road. Just follow the signs to the Museum. For further information please call Carol Morrison at 445-2544.

Scholarships available
     ALPINE — The California Federation of Republican Women, Southern Division, Charlotte Mousel Scholarship is awarded to assist graduating high school seniors who demonstrate their ability to think constructively on matters affecting our government.
     A typewritten essay, not to exceed 1,000 words, with your thoughts on the topic: “Why is the U.S. Constitution unique in human history, and why should each U.S. citizen value its contents?” should be submitted together with the appropriate forms to:

     Please call either of the numbers above to request an application form. Completed applications for the Charlotte Mousel Scholarship must be received no later than Feb. 1, 2010.

SRPL Community Council meeting
     ALPINE — A Sunrise Powerlink Community Council meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club.
     This meeting is open to the public, and is an opportunity to get more information and discuss the proposed SRPL project and the undergrounding along Alpine Blvd.

Steak dinners
     CAMPO — The Campo VFW Post 2080 will begin offering its delicious Steak dinners beginning in February.
     The Steak dinner will reopen on the third Saturday, and the delicious Rib dinners will reopen on the First Friday of March. More announcements to come.

Historical Society pot luck
     ALPINE — The Alpine Historical Society Pot Luck Luncheon is open to the community and a great place to learn more about historic Alpine. It will be held on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Alpine Woman’s Club, 2156 Alpine Boulevard.
     Following the luncheon Virginia Christman, who is a member of the Viejas Tribal Council, will be their featured speaker. Christman actively works to enrich the San Diego community’s knowledge of her native culture and carries on the Kumeyaay traditions of singing and dancing.
