ALPINE — Happy New Year to all! Thank you for making
the year of 2009 a great one at the Alpine Library Friends
Association Bookstore.
January is the time for sorting out older books and
featuring newer ones. We will have sales all month long on
these older books, so stop by at 2554 Alpine Blvd to find
some real gems.
Trails hike
ALPINE — The next APG Trails Subcommittee community
hike will take place this Friday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. at
Wright’s Field.
If you’ve never seen the “Jewel of Alpine” here’s your
chance to see it. Bring your cameras.
Park on the east side of the field at South Grade and
Calle De Compadres. This intersection is about 500 yards
north of the entrance to Palo Verde Ranch,” The Old Ranch,”
( Via Viejas Road). Participants may want to bring drinking
water, a walking stick, snacks and a bag for trash.

Kiwanis Youth Olympics
ALPINE — The Kiwanis Club of Alpine will hold its
annual Youth Olympics on Saturday, Jan. 16 at Alpine
Elementary School.
8:30 a.m. Registration, Receive Bib # and Olympian Pin.
9 a.m. Opening Ceremonies & Competition Begins. 10:30 a.m.
Competition Concludes. 10:30-11:30 Magician Performance (The
Amazing Dana). 11:30-12:30 Medal Presentation, Conclusion of
Games
There will be 12 events: Basketball Dribble, Basketball
Free Throw, Long Jump, 20 Meter Races, Rope Skipping, 40
Meter Races, Pull/Chin Ups, 60 Meter Races, Soccer Ball
Dribble, Sit Ups, Softball Throw, and Bicycle Gymkhana
Competition will be by age group divisions: 4/5/6, 7/8,
9/10 and 11/12/13. Boys and girls will compete separately.
Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for
each event, each division, boys and girls.
Tree town meeting
ALPINE — This year the tree people will be working with
some of the local elementary schools to set up tree programs
in the classrooms. They are also gearing up for their Second
Annual Tree Town event, which will take place at the Alpine
Woman’s Club on April 24.
If you love trees and are interested in learning more
about how you can get involved then plan to attend their
next meeting on Wednesday, Jan 20 at the Alpine Chamber
office, 2707 Alpine Blvd at 5:30 p.m.

Cox heroes scholarships
SAN DIEGO — Cox Heroes scholarships, in denominations
of $2,500 or $10,000, are available for San Diego County
adults, military dependents and high school seniors who
dream of furthering their education.

Free community chipping
ALPINE — The Greater Alpine Fire Safe Council is
hosting free community chipping events on Friday, Jan. 8 for
North Central Alpine (Zone 2) and Friday, Jan. 22 for
Central Alpine (Zone 3). Must register at least 7 days
prior—need not be present.
Restrictions Apply: First come, first served. Limb
diameter restricted to 8 inches. No mud, rocks, construction
debris, or trash. No fibrous material (palm fronds, bamboo,
etc.) No material from businesses, contractors, or
professional landscapers. Crews are unable to chip brush
that has been mechanically removed from the ground by
tractors/heavy machinery.
Stack material with cut ends facing the street. You are
responsible for hauling material to street. Multiple piles
are permitted. Contractors used by GAFSC comply with daily
work restrictions of the San Diego County Project Activity
Level System.

Powerlink town hall meeting
ALPINE — Second District Supervisor Dianne Jacob will
host a community town hall meeting on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6
p.m. at the Alpine Community Center, to discuss the proposed
Sunrise Powerlink and the undergrounding project that will
take place along Alpine Boulevard.
Alpine residents and business owners are encouraged to
attend to ask questions, raise concerns and discuss plans
regarding the project and its effect on the local community.
Book and bake sale
ALPINE —Good Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and
Alpine Community Church is hosting a gigantic two-day book
and bake sale. The sale will be held at Fuller Hall 2225
West Victoria on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
Sunday Jan. 17 from noon until 4 p.m.
In addition to books and home made baked goods, CD’s,
DVD’s and other audio/visual items will be for sale. The
proceeds from the sale will be applied to the education
building roof repairs.
Scholarships available
ALPINE — The California Federation of Republican Women,
Southern Division, Charlotte Mousel Scholarship is awarded
to assist graduating high school seniors who demonstrate
their ability to think constructively on matters affecting
our government.
Awards in the amount of $1,200 (first place) and $800
(second place) will be based on the following: Scholastic
achievement, school activities, community involvement,
political activities, general appearance of the application,
and construction thought demonstrated in an essay.
A typewritten essay, not to exceed 1,000 words, with
your thoughts on the topic: “Why is the U.S. Constitution
unique in human history, and why should each U.S. citizen
value its contents?” should be submitted together with the
appropriate forms to:
