Financial Literacy Class
     DESCANSO—_Jacqueline Penhos, Financial Literacy Educator will be speaking at the Descanso Branch of the San Diego County Library on Saturday, May 8, at 10:00 AM. Scholarship
     ALPINE—The Alpine Woman’s Club Scholarship, Preservation and Education Foundation will offer four $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors who reside in Alpine. Income tax prep

Viejas Concerts
     ALPINE—The DreamCatcher at Viejas Casino, SoCal's premier intimate music venue, has announced an exciting concert lineup featuring an eclectic line up, from Country to Jazz and Rock to R&B.
     The DreamCatcher at Viejas Casino seats approximately 700 people and provides southern Californian's a unique opportunity to catch well-established music superstars, as well as rising stars, in an up-close and personal setting. Once again this year, $1 from every ticket sold will go to the Alpine School District's music and math programs.

Depression Screening Event
     ALPINE—In an effort to promote Mental Health Month, Health & Human Services East Region will be hosting a series of free depression screening events throughout the month of May. Trained mental health volunteers will host display booths and administer depression screening tools to adults 18 years and older at 4 sites around East Region. In Alpine, our event will be held:

Harbison Canyon Lion Student Scholarship

4th Annual Ultimate Music Challenge
VIEJAS—It’s southern California’s biggest cover band smack-down, as Viejas Casino hosts the 4th annual Ultimate Music Challenge.
Thirty-nine of the area’s best cover bands will compete at Viejas Casino’s DreamCatcher Lounge every Sunday night through June 20th from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Up to five bands will perform each Sunday, with the winning bands advancing to the Semifinals, then to the Championship on June 20th.
The winning cover band takes home $25,000, second place earns $10,000 and 3rd place pays $5,000. A panel of distinguished judges will score each band’s performance in the categories of Showmanship, Musical Ability and Audience Response.

The Descanso Garden Club’s annual plant sale
     DESCANSO—The Descanso Garden Club’s annual plant sale will take place at the Descanso Town Hall on Saturday, May 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Offered for sale will be plants – both usual and unusual -- that thrive in Descanso and in nearby communities. In addition to plants, there will be garden art and garden related items for sale.      In addition to plants grown in Descanso and donated by club members, there will be plants and garden products offered for sale by commercial vendors and plant nurseries. The Descanso Garden Club’s Project Daffodil booth will have photos and information available about its various plantings within the community.
     The Descanso Town Hall is located at 24536 Viejas Grade Road in Descanso. (From Highway 79, turn north onto Riverside Road at Descanso Junction. Turn west onto Viejas Grade Road in front of Perkins Store. The Town Hall is located about a quarter mile ahead and on the right.)
Proceeds from the sale will help to fund the Descanso Garden Club’s educational presentations and community service programs such as “Project Daffodil”.

Mountain Empire Men’s Club (MEMC) News
     PINE VALLEY—Pine Valley has plenty of horses, but May 22th Old Highway 80 will be lined with chrome horses. The MEMC is teaming up again this year with the Monday Night Car Club and their friends for a day of custom cars, street rods, classics and more at the Run to the Hills Car Show 8. If you would like to show your car, sponsor a trophy or be a vendor, contact George (619-440-6168 or Dave (619-449-3159) from the Monday Nite Car Club or any MEMC member. Proceeds from this event will benefit youth programs including the Mountain Empire Men’s Club Scholarship Fund and the Monday Nite Car Club Christmas Toy Drive for military families.
     We are also busy planning for the 40th Annual Pine Valley Days. We will be returning the BBQ dinner to Friday night this year on July 30th, with the parade on Saturday, July 31st. 4-H Amigos looking for members
     ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4H Club is looking for new members from the ages of 5-19.
     4H is a kid's club that provides learning opportunities such as horses, dogs, community service, archery, and judging. 4-H is looking for members and adult leaders that would be interested in Small animals, Biking, Leather Making, Lego, Computer, Garden, Arts and Crafts or any other fun projects you would like to add.
     The most popular program is the Horse project, which lets children that are 9-19 years old learn how to ride a horse in a safe, fun environment.

STEEL CANYON GRADUATION CEREMONY
    Commuters can expect heavy traffic on June 3rd, at Campo Road/Highway 94 starting around 4:30 PM and again following the ceremony at approximately 7:30 PM. Stadium gates will open about 4:30 PM. Arrive early, parking at SCHS is limited. Free shuttle bus service to and from the event is available and located at Skyline Church, 11330 Campo Road, La Mesa (please do not contact the church regarding the graduation event). Alpine History Days
      ALPINE—Come and celebrate the 10th Annual Alpine History Days on Saturday, June 5th from 11am to 2pm at the Museums, 2116 Tavern Road Alpine 91901. There will be something for everyone. Tour the two pioneer houses, listen to the East County Retired Teacher’s Chorus sing and see the display of the working beehive. This is also the time when the 3rd grade essay contest winners receive their awards for their essays about Alpine history.
A delicious lunch will be served of homemade chili, salad, garlic bread, drinks and ice cream sundaes. Cost is only $8 for adults and $5 for children. There will also be a 50/50 raffle where you can win half of what is collected. This is a great opportunity to learn more about historic Alpine, get together with old friends and meet some new ones. This event is a fundraiser for the Alpine Historical Society to help maintain their historic buildings and create Heritage Park for the community. All donations are tax deductible.

10th Annual Cajon Classic Cruise Opens Wednesday, June 30
       ALPINE—The 2010 Cajon Classic Cruise, Southern California’s largest weekly classic car show, commences Wednesday, June 30, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Main Street in the heart of historic Downtown El Cajon. Admission is free to the Cajon Classic Cruise car show, featuring more than 500 classic, custom and hot rod cars and motorcycles valued at more than $10 million in a street festival setting every Wednesday evening through September 29. Two special post-season car shows will be held, including the Halloween Trunk or Treat show on October 27, and the Parade of Lights Holiday show on December 8.

Fishing at Lake Cuyamaca
      CUYAMACA—The tackle shop is open every day at 6 a.m., closing at 4:40 p.m. You may fish until sundown. There is a mid-week motorboat special, Monday through Thursday, $25. for the day. Fishing has been excellent although it takes a hardy soul to put up with the cold and wind.
     There is a decontamination wash down required for all private boats and motors before a launch. Also, float tubes and waders must be washed down before using the Lake.      There is a fee for the wash down.
We still have the free fishing classes every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. You can meet Ranger Charlie at the Launch Ramp.

Volunteers needed
      PINE VALLEY — Horse of the Sun Equestrian Facility, 12 minutes east of Alpine, is in need of immediate volunteers to help with their Horses Heal Hearts and Team Esteem Programs. Assistance is needed with horse care and support, working with children in specialized equine character and esteem education programs.

     ALPINE — Kiwanis International has been serving the world for over 93 years. Our Alpine Kiwanis Club has been serving the Community of Alpine for 58 years.
We have sponsored our Local Boy Scout Troop 100.
Get on the Band Wagon of Community Service by joining the Alpine Kiwanis Club. The more members we have, the better service we can provide our Community. We meet every Saturday at 7 a.m. at the Alpine Elementary School.
