2nd Annual Events Proves That There’s More to Julian Than Apples
     JULIAN— Every year, thousands of people flock to Julian for its delicious apple pie varieties but there are a number of unique restaurants that offer such gourmet delights as Halibut Florentine, St. Louis Pork Ribs, Wood-Fired Pizza, French pastries, Lobster Bisque with Sherry and they’ll be featured at the second annual Taste of Julian event on Saturday, April 10th from 1pm to 4pm. Taste of Julian is a self-guided culinary tour to explore the one-of-a-kind restaurants throughout Julian and its surrounding area. Tickets are limited, cost $20 per person and will be available online at www.julianmerchants.org through Paypal. There will be 50 tickets available on a first-come, first-serve basis at Town Hall the day of the event.
    “Your ticket is your passport to come up to Julian and sample menu specialties from more than 10 of our favorite locations,” explains Tracy Turner, president of the Julian Merchants Association which is sponsoring the event. “Although you’ll be able to sample our famous apple pie, you’ll see that there’s a lot more in Julian to whet your appetite.”
   Participants will pick up colored wristbands to easily identify them along with a map of participating restaurants upon check-in at Town Hall on April 10th. The self-guided tour allows participants to visit participating restaurants at their own pace, in any order they choose within the specified time frame, and enjoy the unique atmosphere each restaurant has to offer. While you’re sampling the local cuisine, be sure to learn more about Julian’s rich history, browse through its charming shops, and enjoy its old fashioned atmosphere. ACC tennis
     ALPINE — Spring into action with tennis classes offered at the ACC beginning in March.
ACC teaching pro, Rene Toscano will provide a large variety of classes fitting all age groups and player ability levels. After school youth classes, as well as adult morning and evening classes will headline a majority of classes.
     High School student athletes are encouraged to take advantage of specialized training classes intended to prepare players to improve tennis skills and game strategies necessary to compete at a higher level.

Luke Barbour Scholarship
     DESCANSO—Win a $1,000 scholarship and save your parents some money. . . The Luke Barbour Scholarship applications are now available inside Perkins Store and the Descanso Library. $1,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded to a graduating senior with a “B” average who is a resident of Descanso and/or the son/daughter of a Town Hall member.
     The competition will consist of a 500 word essay and oral interview. Deadline for the essay is April 2nd, and the interview date is April 18th. The scholarship is good for beauty school, vocational school, or any accredited junior college, college, or university.

     Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club to Host NRA Day
ALPINE—Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club will host a NRA Day Family Shooting Sports Camp at their facility on April 18th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Alpine, California. This free event is open to the public for people over the age of six.
     This goal of this event is to introduce families to a variety of shooting sports and outdoor activities in a supervised and enjoyable environment. The day's activities will include a gun safety course, hunter safety trail, wildlife identification, and K-9 demonstration by the local Sheriff's Department. Participants will also have the chance to shoot air rifles, .22 pistols, rifles, shotguns, and can learn about reloading ammunition.
     Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club will also be introducing attendees to various NRA programs including Women On Target(r) and Boy Scout Merit Badge programs. NRA gun safety mascot Eddie Eagle will also be at the clubhouse and playground to help children learn about the Eddie Eagle GunSafe(r) Program.
     Each participant will receive a comprehensive gun safety lesson, free lunch, and bottled water. The first 200 children will also receive a free t-shirt. Please do not bring firearms or ammunition as these will be provided by Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club.

Alpine Community Church Annual Rummage Sale

Goals workshop

Free Legal Clinic April 30, 2010

The Descanso Garden Club’s annual plant sale
     DESCANSO—The Descanso Garden Club’s annual plant sale will take place at the Descanso Town Hall on Saturday, May 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Offered for sale will be plants – both usual and unusual -- that thrive in Descanso and in nearby communities. In addition to plants, there will be garden art and garden related items for sale. Additional information about the sale can be obtained from the Descanso Garden Club’s website: http://descansogardenclub.org/.
     In addition to plants grown in Descanso and donated by club members, there will be plants and garden products offered for sale by commercial vendors and plant nurseries. The Descanso Garden Club’s Project Daffodil booth will have photos and information available about its various plantings within the community.
     The Descanso Town Hall is located at 24536 Viejas Grade Road in Descanso. (From Highway 79, turn north onto Riverside Road at Descanso Junction. Turn west onto Viejas Grade Road in front of Perkins Store. The Town Hall is located about a quarter mile ahead and on the right.)
Proceeds from the sale will help to fund the Descanso Garden Club’s educational presentations and community service programs such as “Project Daffodil”.

Mountain Empire Men’s Club
     PINE VALLEY—Pine Valley has plenty of horses, but May 22th Old Highway 80 will be lined with chrome horses.
     The MEMC is teaming up again this year with the Monday Night Car Club and their friends for a day of custom cars, street rods, classics and more at the Run to the Hills Car Show 8. If you would like to show your car, sponsor a trophy or be a vendor, contact George (619-440-6168 or Dave (619-449-3159) from the Monday Nite Car Club or any MEMC member. Proceeds from this event will benefit youth programs including the Mountain Empire Men’s Club Scholarship Fund and the Monday Nite Car Club Christmas Toy Drive for military families.
     We are also busy planning for the 40th Annual Pine Valley Days. We will be returning the BBQ dinner to Friday night this year on July 30th, with the parade on Saturday, July 31st. 4-H Amigos looking for members
     ALPINE — The Alpine Amigos 4H Club is looking for new members from the ages of 5-19.
     4H is a kid's club that provides learning opportunities such as horses, dogs, community service, archery, and judging. 4-H is looking for members and adult leaders that would be interested in Small animals, Biking, Leather Making, Lego, Computer, Garden, Arts and Crafts or any other fun projects you would like to add.
     The most popular program is the Horse project, which lets children that are 9-19 years old learn how to ride a horse in a safe, fun environment.

Steel Canyon Graduation Ceremony
     Commuters can expect heavy traffic on June 3rd, at Campo Road/Highway 94 starting around 4:30 PM and again following the ceremony at approximately 7:30 PM. Stadium gates will open about 4:30 PM. Arrive early, parking at SCHS is limited. Free shuttle bus service to and from the event is available and located at Skyline Church, 11330 Campo Road, La Mesa (please do not contact the church regarding the graduation event). Fishing at Lake Cuyamaca
     CUYAMACA—The tackle shop is open every day at 6 a.m., closing at 4:40 p.m. You may fish until sundown. There is a mid-week motorboat special, Monday through Thursday, $25. for the day. Fishing has been excellent although it takes a hardy soul to put up with the cold and wind.
     There is a decontamination wash down required for all private boats and motors before a launch.
Also, float tubes and waders must be washed down before using the Lake. There is a fee for the wash down.
We still have the free fishing classes every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. You can meet Ranger Charlie at the Launch Ramp.

Collections for Rady’s Children’s Hospital
     ALPINE — Alpine residents have continued to respond to requests for soaps and shampoo for the Ronald McDonald house. They now have plenty of soap and shampoo. They could use toothbrushes, men's and woman's white socks and hairbrushes, and under garments.
     Ronald McDonald House, next to the Rady’s Children’s Hospital is always in need of these donations. Rady’s is also collecting pull-tabs from soda and beer cans, to be recycled for money.
     Ronald McDonald House houses families who have critically ill children in Rady’s Children’s Hospital.
Kiwanis began an effort last year, collecting and donating these items to Ronald McDonald House and they are very happy with Alpine’s collection efforts. Items can be bagged and dropped off at The Alpine Sun office.
     Contact Dick Rabell at 445-5712 to make arrangements to have your vehicle picked up and donated. Will be auctioned off and you will be notified.
