Boulevard, CA – Clover Flat Elementary of Mountain Empire Unified School District recently received some of the highest honors presented to schools by the California Department of Education by receiving the Gold Ribbon School Award and Title 1 Achievement Award in Anaheim, California. Clover Flat Elementary was one of 29 schools in San Diego County and 780 schools in the state of California to win the title and up to 6,000 schools were eligible to apply for the award.
The school was selected because of its exemplary reading program that combines three best practice strategies: school wide, guided level reading groups for 30 minutes each day, an independent reading incentive medal program using Accelerated Reader, and the use of school wide student data binders for students to track their goals and progress.
“This is a school wide effort where all of our employees and students participate to make this program a success,” says Principal Christi Martelli. The students at Clover Flat have demonstrated measurable progress toward closing achievement gaps with more proficient readers each trimester. Principal Martelli credits her staff’s dedication to helping students achieve their academic goals as well as student effort, “we have great communication, collaboration, and passion. We believe none of us is as smart as all of us as a team!”
Schools applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies, and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies. The award recognized middle and high schools last year. In addition, Mountain Empire High School won the Gold Ribbon School Award last year as all district schools steadily advance in achievement.
Mountain Empire Unified School District covers 660 square miles of east San Diego County, a diverse rural community, offering a full range of educational, athletic, and vocational opportunities for its students including before and after school programs, homeschool, and Pre-K opportunities.
