Alpine has co-Honorary Mayors for 2016!
Running as a team in the annual Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce race, Bob Ring of Barons Market and Joseph Perricone of The Canvas Makers earned the most money for their nonprofit local improvement projects.  Both community leaders are Chamber directors.
Ring, Perricone and candidate Vincenzo Croce of Mediterraneo Italian Bistro & Bar, raised a total of more than $3,000 to improve Alpine, Chamber President/CEO Patricia Cannon said, announcing the results Dec. 8 at the Chamber’s Hot Topics Business Networking Breakfast.
“We will make a great team,” Perricone said, praising the “marvelous job” that 2015 Alpine Honorary Mayor Christine Connell has done.
Connell, president of the Alpine Library Friends Association (ALFA), presented the huge symbolic Alpine “Key to the Community” to the winners while the crowd applauded in the new Sycamore Room at the Viejas Casino & Resort at 5000 Willows Road.
The annual Chamber race is a way to raise money to improve Alpine. Anyone can vote for an Honorary Mayor candidate by donating money to their election campaigns. Each dollar counts as a “vote.”
Perricone raised money for ALFA’s effort to furnish the new Alpine Library. The donations to Ring will help paint the front of the Alpine Community Center.  Croce campaigned to help Alpine’s “Shelter Dogs to Dream Dogs,” which trains shelter dogs to be therapy and service dogs.
Ring is the only Alpine Honorary Mayor candidate to win twice. His first term was 2009.
“I already know what I can and can’t do,” Ring quipped in an interview. “I can’t fix any (traffic) tickets or pot holes, but I’ll be glad to answer any questions I can about Alpine.”
Perricone said that he was not only surprised that he won, but “I was happy to see the people of Alpine come together for the library.”
The co-Honorary Mayors are active businessmen who are also involved in community service organizations and projects.  Perricone and Ring said as co-Honorary Mayors they can share the duties of appearing at Chamber and area events.
“We’re both very busy in our businesses and this (team approach) will be a relief for us,” Ring said.
